Formal Proposal Assignment Sheet
Overview
Coming after two essays and 1 annotated bibliography, this next assignment deals with a brief but equally important form of academic writing: the proposal. You will develop the paper you propose here as your Synthesis #2. For a number of reasons, the Proposal is an assignment you want to master for this class and beyond.
In upper level classes, you may write proposals for long projects and essays. You will also use proposals in formulating business plans and almost any group project that involves producing documents. Proposals are also embedded in the writing process itself in the Invention stage of discovering an idea. Finally, a proposal is often the first step in taking action to get something done or secured in many industries, grant, or government office as well as a variety of other areas of work. Proposals, and proposal writing, count a great deal. This Proposal assignment will take a general approach and provide you with the basics to build on in your later courses.
Basic Task
You must write a proposal on a topic that interests you and is new to you. I do not want you writing about a topic you have written about before in any course. I want to give you maximum freedom to let your mind roam here, but I am limiting you to a topic that is in some way related to the area of “Health and Medicine” (Common Reader Chapter 12) or “Media and Popular Culture” and “Health and Medicine” (Common Reader Chapters 9 and 12) and has a loose or specific connection with one of the assigned readings from the “Health and Medicine” found on Blackboard or in the Common Reader (see Synthesis Essay #2 Assignment Sheet where these instructions are also reflected).
On Thursday, April 7, 2016 required individual conferences are scheduled regarding the Synthesis Essay #2 Formal Proposal. Conferences will be held in the English Department, 73 Tremont, 8th Floor. Please bring your in progress proposal to this conference.
Style and Structure
The Proposal should be 2 pages in length and provide a specific plan for the Synthesis Essay #2: a 7-8-page paper with 7 sources.
The Proposal will have three distinct parts: Introduction, Discussion, and Conclusion. Please use these subheadings in your Proposal. I suggest you use 1st person and stay with this perspective the entire time.
The Introduction should describe the topic area, your interest in this topic, and what motivated or initiated you to choose this topic.
The Discussion (or body) section should discuss what you think you may find out or what areas you are eager to learn about in your writing and discuss the one essay from the “Health and Medicine” assigned readings on Blackboard or in the Common Reader that prompted your interest to propose this topic. If the essay left you with a question or the need for further information, explain this.
The Conclusion should explain your step-by-step method of pursuing this topic. What will you do first, and why? Will you begin writing or researching or a little of both? What difficulties/challenges do you believe you will encounter? Be concrete here. Do not leave the reader guessing. What sort of a writing process will you follow? How many drafts will you probably make? When and where will you do research? (You should be as specific as stating, “I will freewrite 2 pages with ideas to research.”)
Remember to proofread this assignment for grammar, spelling, and punctuation since revision will not be allowed in the form of a second draft.

Answer
Introduction
The journey of a person with a chronic disease is not only stressful to the patient, but also to his caregivers and loved ones (Girgis, A. et al. 197). Cancer is increasingly becoming common and more people even the youth are not spared. Reading Kalanithi’s writings (my case patient) as he describes his journey with cancer while knowing that with every negative result his chances of survival were waning completely attracted my attention and feelings. The courage and determination that he exemplified in the face of death piqued my curiosity in understanding how cancer patients coped from diagnosis, treatment, recovery or even death. Additionally, I became interested in understanding how the different coping mechanisms affected the patient’s loved ones.
Discussion
Given the courage that Kalanithi demonstrated, I am hoping to find out what impacts such actions had upon his wife and relatives. Additionally, I would like to know whether his chosen method of dealing with the diagnosis had any effect on the length of time he lived after diagnosis. Moreover, I would like to know whether the way he handled himself helped his family to cope and come to terms with his imminent demise. Is there a recommended coping mechanism for both patient and loved ones? What are the impacts of the various coping mechanisms? What determines the choice of coping mechanism? Such were the questions that prompted further research into the subject of dealing with such news in a patient, caregiver, and loved ones.
My Last Day as a Surgeon is a story by Paul Kalanithi on his diagnosis and journey with Stage IV metastatic lung cancer (Kalanithi, Paul et al. n.p). He was a resident neurosurgeon who after diagnosis and during the remaining two years of his life had a child and wrote incredible stories about his journey as a doctor facing death. He narrates how he finds out that his cancer had progressed and how death was inevitable. Although he had cancer, he still went to work and carried on with his work. However, on seeing how bad his cancer had become, he knew it was time to leave work. The description of the events does not convey sadness or anger but a resigned acceptance of what awaited him. His reaction to what was happening to him seemed deliberate and thought out; he did not have a breakdown or such reactions. The reactions were probably due to his profession and the need to critically analyze situations and choose the best action. However, I was left wondering how a regular person would have acted on receiving the news.
Conclusion
The first step will be researching the topic to get the idea of what information is available. Later, I would write the first draft to provide an overview of the work. The draft would be a maximum of two pages that would act as a guideline on the essay. Depending on the draft, I will write others until the resulting outline provides the necessary framework for the piece. The challenges will likely to be the breakdown of the essay to create a logic flow and present a compelling but factual work. I will research using credible databases such as JSTR. Due to the nature of the essay, I will search for peer-reviewed journal articles that are not more than five years. The journal articles will be limited to the most recent to ensure that the information is up to date. I will then determine the particular journal items that I will use based on their material. Afterward, I will write the essay following the outline and the journal articles.
