From Data to Knowledge and Wisdom

            This essay discusses the process in which data is transformed into knowledge and later wisdom. Data is information in the form of experiences, facts or figures; whereas, knowledge is defined as the awareness that figures, experiences or facts exist and how to access it. Wisdom is the awareness of a broad spectrum of statistics, facts, and guidelines to enable one to make effective decisions (McGonigle, 2015). The following are associations and examples of Knowledge acquisition, knowledge processing, knowledge generation, knowledge dissemination, and wisdom.

            Knowledge acquisition, knowledge processing, knowledge generation, knowledge dissemination, and wisdom are interdependent/related processes/terms. Knowledge acquisition involves extraction and structuring of knowledge from different sources. Knowledge generation involves conversion or transfer of different types of knowledge as uses interact, practice, and learn. Knowledge processing includes things that people do such as experiment in order to know. Knowledge dissemination include sharing of acquired, generated, and/or processed knowledge; whereas, wisdom is the use of evidence-based knowledge to make decisions. The relationships that exist between the above terms is that knowledge must be acquired, processed, generated, and shared/disseminated in order to promote application of wisdom or adopt of evidence-based practice (McGonigle, 2015).

            The following are examples of knowledge acquisition, knowledge processing, knowledge generation, knowledge dissemination, and feedback. Conducting meta-analyses or systematic reviews to call for practice or policy change is a good example of knowledge acquisition process. Engaging different stakeholders for shared-decision making is an example of knowledge generation practice; whereas, knowledge processing may include conduction of surveys or experiments in order to test the performance of a given experimental drug. Knowledge is disseminated or shared through publications, conferences, and digital media. Lastly, an example of feedback in healthcare practice include outcome of a treatment plan that was informed by evidence-based decisions.
