Functional Patterns in Nursing
Functional health patterns are a series of questions that a nurse asks to understand patient’s overall health and lifestyle. They are part of the admission process when an out-patient is being admitted to a hospital. The health patterns include health, diet, elimination, occupation, sleep, and sexuality. Elimination complexities are health conditions that prevent patients from excreting waste products from the body properly. Nurses can use functional health patterns to diagnose any elimination complexity in patients.
The paired kidneys are mostly considered the principal organs of excretion. The kidneys eliminate excess water and waste from the blood and convert these wastes to urine. Kidney failure is an example of elimination complexity. Patients with kidney failure cannot exercise for long as compared to healthy people. The patient also experiences low libido and cannot ejaculate, sleep disorder; as the patient sleeps mainly during the daytime. Kidney failure also makes the patients have a build-up of potassium in their blood which causes problems to the heart, vomiting due to build-up of potassium; hence the patients tend to limit potassium intake in the diet.
Nurses collect this information during a functional health pattern that helps in the diagnosis of the excretory disorder. If the patient is experiencing dysuria, this can provide more evidence for kidney failure. The nurse can address the problem and develop a plan for better health care. Some symptoms present in kidney failure are also in other diseases such as typhoid, which is not associated with elimination complexity. Such symptoms include vomiting, weakness, and fatigue. Functional patterns will be used to rule out other diseases such as typhoid. Functional patterns also provide nurses with the past and current state of health of a patient.
