Answer

  • The Removal of Native Americans

The removal of Native Americans is a topic that has attracted various scholars and researchers both in the past and in the present times. During 1800s, different researchers and scholars wrote articles, messages and letters on newspapers addressing the removal of native Americans in different perspectives.

Source 1: Elias Boudinot, An Address to the Whites (Philadelphia, 1826)

Elias Boudinot is described as the first editor of the first Cherokee newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix. Boudinot wrote this article " An Address to the Whites” before the US officially implemented Jackson's removal policy. "An address to the Whites" is an article that offers evidence that Jackson's claim to be removing natives from American is an advantage to the natives themselves (Boudinot 443).  In an Address to the Whites, Boudinot challenges Americans by asking who is an Indian to them. Moreover, the An Address to the Whites presents disconnected facts relative to the current improved states, and to the ultimate prospects of the Cherokees. in the source, the author asks Americans if the red men shall live or be swept away from earth. According to this article, the decision of the Native Americans to live or die is based on the hands of the Americans (Boudinot 443). The author indicates that during this epoch, the Native Americans hanged upon the mercy of the Americans. An Address to the Whites by Boudinit is an article that asks humanity whether they will remove the Native Americans or save them.

Source 2: Andrew Jackson, Second Annual Message, December 6, 1830.

In his second annual message to the Congress, Jackson, who was the president of the United States in that era defends the removal policy (Jackson 1790). According to the 'Second Annual Message" by Andrew Jackson, the native removal policy presented different attainments. For instance, he indicates that the Removal policy will relieve different states such as Mississippi and Alabama where Indians settled and enable them to advance rapidly in population, power and wealth (Jackson 1790).  Moreover, "The second annual message emphasizes that the Removal policy will separate the Indians from immediate contact with white settlers, free them from their authority, and enable the Natives to pursue happiness in their own approach under their instructions.

Source 3: George Harkin's Farewell Letter to the American People.

During the era of the removal of the Natives, George Harkin was a chief of the Choctaw tribe in the 1800s. The Farewell Letter to the American People was published in the newspaper following his accord with the United States to leave the ancestral terrestrial of the Choctaw community and migrate to the west, a journey described as the "Trail of Tears" (Harkins 1). In his letter Harkins informs the Americans that he is bound to stay with his people, the Choctaw tribe. He indicates that he was forced to migrate with his people given that his destiny is to be cast among the Choctaw tribe (Harkins 1). He concludes his letter by asking the American civilization to regard the Choctaw tribe with feelings of kindness.
