Gender Gaps in Offending
In the year 2007, the United States Department of Justice carried out a National Crime Investigation Study to determine who is generally more violent between women and men (Strickland, 2010). From the findings, according to Strickland (2010), it was evaluated that among all offenses committed, 20.1% were done by women and 75.6% by men, with genders of the remaining 4.3% not identifiable by the victims. These are statistics collected are from all types of offenses being; property crimes, personal crimes, statutory crimes, inchoate crimes, and financial crimes. In my opinion, the gender gap in offending does exist. However, in the past few years, it has been narrowing. According to a research by Estrada, Bäckman, and Nilsson (2015), the gender gap in offenses exists and is declining every day because of the reduction of the number of convicted men. The authors also state that the decline of the gender gap is not mostly due to high crime rates among women, as assumed by many individuals.
At least 1.7 million children in the United States have their parents in the United States prison system, and 30% of them will follow in their parents’ footsteps, according to research (Krupat and Chaffkin, 2019). Among these people, crimes they committed fell into either of the main types of offenses, which will be looked into. Personal crimes, which are those that harm another person directly like rape. Another type is property crimes involving others’ property interference like robbery. Also, there are inchoate crimes are those that are not completed, like attempted murder or rape. Additionally, there are statutory crimes, which are simply forbidden by law like drinking alcohol in Iran, a Muslim country that considers it as Haram. Also, there are financial crimes, which involve fraud. Among these, the rates in men being involved in them are higher than in women, which makes me stand for the fact that there is a gender gap in offending.
In conclusion, men are generally more involved in crime as compared to women. This brings me to the opinion that gender gaps in offending occur.
