What is it?
Gene therapy involves altering the genes inside in the body's cells in an effort to treat or stop disease (Goncalves & Paiva, 2017)
It can be done through several ways:
- Replacing a disease-causing gene with a healthy copy of the gene (Goncalves & Paiva, 2017)
- Inactivating a disease-causing gene that is not functioning properly (Goncalves & Paiva, 2017)
- Introducing a new or modified gene into the body to help treat a disease (Goncalves & Paiva, 2017).
Why is it done?
Gene therapy is used to correct defective genes in order to cure a disease or help your body better fight disease (Elverum & Whiteman, 2020). As such it provide a possibility of positive medicinal outcome which can improve one’s life (Maldonado et al. 2019).
