      1. QUESTION

      Scenario Summary

A Kansas City based supplier of health care information technology (HCIT) solutions has recently hired you as a Human Resource Manager. You are in charge of hiring new medical consultants for the sales division of this organization. Due to the competitive marketplace, sales and revenues are at an all-time low. During your interview, you stated that you could serve as a valuable asset to this company. You noted your long-standing history of selecting the best candidates for a variety of positions and stated that you could bring the sales division back to its place as the leading resource of your organization. You want to perform well at this job because it is a big career move for you.  You know that if people trust your judgement about the quality of the people you hire, that they will trust your judgement about other matters as well.  Also, the more successful HR managers in this company tend to move to higher positions within the organization.

      Your Role

Your job is to hire a medical consultant to assist with sales of your latest HCIT solutions to a global marketplace. This job requires that the consultant be articulate, sophisticated, and knowledgeable about medical terminology and technology. This job also includes spending some leisure time after 5:00 P.M. with prospective clients.

      Your Assignment

Required: Read the case summary and accompanying character descriptions, then answer the following question:

      Key Players

      Ren Sanspit,  Changing Careers

As my resume states, I was a dentist before arthritis made that career too painful. My physician says that my condition would not interfere with this position.  I think working with people in sales would be more interesting than taking bite-wings and placing rubber dams. I am an empty nester and want to devote time to my new career in order to be successful.

      Angie Gram, Medical Technologist

As my resume states, I was an engineering major and I designed medical devices. I am very good with people and I am working on improving my English-speaking skills. I graduated first in my class and I wrote a paper on the use of qr codes to monitor patient medication that was recently published in a peer-reviewed journal. I am a leading expert in the medical technology field.

      Medica Seles, Informatics Consultant

As my resume states, I have been in a medical sales consultant for five years. I have been awarded the Sales Consultant of the Year at my last company. Currently I am relocating to Kansas City because I will be getting married next month. My credentials are stellar and I graduated at the top of my class in Healthcare Informatics.

      Karen Comfort, BSN

As my resume states, I have a BSN and have been employed in  various positions in a variety of medical specialty practices.  I have worked for M.D.s, D.O.s and hospital administrators.  Having worked in so many different specialty practices I am extremely well versed in medical terminology.  I am single, therefore I am available to travel and work long hours.

Answer

The information technology world is a dynamic one and very competitive with only the very best of the inventions fairing well in the marketplace. This means that organizations need to invest in the latest technologies and have the best sales team to market and ensure the equipment perform well in the market in terms of sales. This study looks into the way I selected a medical consultant to work with the sales department of my organization based in Kansas City that deals with health care information technology solutions.

I am the head of the Human resource manager of a Kansas-based organization that provides information technology solutions that are medical based. My task was to select an ideal candidate that suits the position of a medical consultant to help the sales division of the organization market some of the latest equipment and strive to make them reach the larger global market. According to Gatewood, Field and Barrick, (2015, the human resource department is tasked with the role of determining the best candidate for a job and should have in place a formulated policy to guide the process. The ideal candidate has to meet some requirements, including being well versed with the terminology used in information technology and medical appliances. The candidate should also be articulate and sophisticated. The job requires one committed to frequent travels and willingness to spend evenings with their clients.

The shortlisted candidates were four with various strengths and weaknesses, they were; Ren Sanpit, who was a dentist and seeking to change careers after being ill for a while; Angie Gram, a medical technologist with an engineering major and an expert in information technology; and Medical Seles who was an Informatics Consultant and was the recipient of the best sales award of the year at the previous company and Karen Comfort a B.S.N and has worked with a number of hospitals and has great knowledge of the equipment, she also is single and willing to take on long hours of work.

Kessler et al. (2012) propose a hybrid system of ensuring a proper selection of the best candidates for a job. The system does eliminate the candidates based on the job requirements and description leaving an ideal one. An analysis of the candidate’s strengths in comparison with the set parameters of the needed candidate, therefore, helps limit and reduce the number of candidates.

My candidate of choice was Medica Seles, the informatics consultant. Observably, she possesses the skills required to ensure that sales reach the desired levels in the global market. She was the recipient of the sales consultant of the year award and has an enormous wealth of experience in the medical field having worked as a sales consultant for five years. Even though her schedule might change as she is relocating to Kansas to get married, she has the ideal requirements for this position and would possibly adjust well. The other candidate did not meet the criteria because of various reasons. Karen, even though had great knowledge of the equipment and had interaction with doctors, she had little to show about sales. Angie, on the other hand, was not eloquent enough in English, and Sanpit was going to be a newcomer in the sales field and was recovering from arthritis. This condition could possibly affect his movement and limit him especially with the long working hours.

In conclusion, getting and ideal candidate among a few shortlisted group of people is a complex venture, therefore, a human resource team should come up with reference points to help limit the candidates and pick the most ideal. All the candidates had great resumes and were outstanding academically, however, the need was more sales based and Medica stood out in this regard. Even though she is getting married, she is a hard-working candidate and has proof of success in sales.
