The TeamSTEPPS initiative is an approach jointly designed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Department of Defense (DoD), to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency in healthcare (Thomas & Galla, 2013) . In other words, its main objective is to enhance patient outcomes by educating healthcare professionals on the importance of team work, proficient leadership, and communication skills (Clancy & Tornberg, 2015). In this regard, TeamSTEPPS provides healthcare organizations with ready-to-use training materials to integrate team work tools into all areas of the healthcare system.
The effective implementation of the TeamSTEPPS initiative within a clinical setting can help reduce patient errors, improve teamwork, and enhance communication. In this regard, it requires full support from the management, behavioral change interventions, and changes within the work environment (Clancy & Tornberg, 2015). Additionally, the initiative should be divided and employed in three stages for it to be successful. The first stage entails a thorough assessment of the organization in question to determine, whether, it is ready for the TeamSTEPPS initiative. The second phase involves planning, training, and implementation (Thomas & Galla, 2013). This phase is intended to help team members develop an action plan to guide them during the training and implementation process. The final stage is the sustainment phase which is meant to monitor and sustain behaviors that promote team collaboration and patient safety within the health institution (Clancy & Tornberg, 2015). The TeamSTEPPS program provides resources and guidelines for gathering data necessary for the progression and successful completion of each phase. Moreover, all key stakeholders are consulted and engaged throughout the implementation process to ensure their full collaboration.
