Answer
The analysis identifies various at-risk populations of missing vital vaccines or immunisations. These include children aged 1 to 2 years, those living in remote locations or low socioeconomic status, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and those living in areas of high unemployment rates1. Some of the reasons for low uptake of vaccines include parent’s perception that vaccines can cause distress to the child, healthcare professionals lack of confidence in administering vaccines, parents’ failure to make informed decisions, and lack of access to immunisation services3. Health promotion will aim to address some of the issues that contribute poor uptake of vaccines such as unwillingness or uncertainty to receive vaccinations and negative attitudes towards vaccines. It has been established that distrust attitudes towards vaccines tend to be higher among people with lower levels of education, people of ethnic minority backgrounds, poo knowledge on vaccines, lower annual income and poor compliance with government guidelines4.
Goal: The goal of this health promotion plan is to reduce the prevalence of infectious diseases, which can be immunised, among children in the Northern Territory from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities by Jun 2022 compared to prevalence in the year 2021.
Justification
There is need to improve vaccination rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander to reduce healthcare disparities that may arise due to low immunisation rates1.
Objective and related sub-objectives:
Education of parents and healthcare providers can increase uptake of vaccines among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. The ultimate aim is to promote collaboration of patients and healthcare providers especially when delivering injectable vaccines to children in distress. This kind of teamwork can eventually result in improvement of vaccination rates among members of the Indigenous populations.
