Comparison Between Mr. Frankland in “Hound of the Baskerville: and Lady Catherine De Bourgh from “Pride and Prejudice”

Characterization is one of the fundamental aspects of novel writing. In Hound of the Baskerville and Pride and Prejudice, the authors developed two comparable characters, namely, Mr. Frankland and Lady Catherine De Bourgh The two characters of interest are both members of the upper-class in society. This paper, therefore, compares Mr. Frankland and Lady Catherine de Bourgh of Hound of the Baskerville and Pride and Prejudice, respectively, by highlighting their differences and similarity as well as the function of each character in the story .

 

Differences The two characters, Mr. Frankland and Lady Catherine De Bourgh compare various aspects of their novels' roles. For instance, Mr. Frankland plays of tertiary character in The Hound of the Baskerville. As such, Mr. Frankland appears to agonize anything and everything in the novel. Additionally, he appears occasionally in the novel o the investigation of Sir. Charles's death and his daughter's marriage. In contrast, lady Catherine de Bourgh plays the role of a protagonist. She forms the plot of the entire novel. Moreover, Lady Catherine is the forms the main story of the whole book. Moreover, almost all the characters are related to her or have encountered her in the entire novel – Pride and Prejudice.

Moreover, the two characters, Mr. Frankland and Lady Catherine De Bourgh differ in their role in developing the theme of marriage. In Hound of the Baskerville, Mr. Frankland refuses to allow his daughter to marry a man of her choice. His daughter – Laura – marries against his wishes, making him reject her as a daughter. In contrast, lady Catherine De Bourgh of Pride and Prejudice believes in traditional marriage and allows her daughter to marry her cousin. Even though the marriage did not happen, Lady Catherine De Bourgh is never against her daughter's marriage. Unlike Mr. Frankland, she never rejected her daughter.

Similarities 

One of the similarities between the two characters – Mr. Frankland and Lady Catherine De Bourgh – is that they are both sarcastic. For instance, Mr. Frankland appears to be sardonic in Hound of the Baskerville based on how he approaches the societal issue. He sues everything unlawful in the community of Baskerville Hall neighborhood. Additionally, Mr. Frankland was fascinated with the British to the extent of filing a lawsuit against everything; it is even funny how he never took Holmes to court. Similarly, lady Catherine De Bourgh is regarded as sarcastic in Pride and Prejudice. She forcefully wants Elizabeth not to marry her nephew because he was to marry her daughter. Besides, she is even more mocking when she approaches Elizabeth over the issue.

Another similarity between the two characters - Mr. Frankland and Lady Catherine De Bourgh – is that they both care. In Hound of the Baskerville, Mr. Frankland had a daughter known as Laura Lyons, whom she cared for and was concerned about the man she wanted to marry. Consequently, Mr. Frankland disowned her daughter due to the disappointment that resulted from her marry the man he was against. Likewise, lady Catherine De Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice also cared about her daughter named Anne de Bourgh, whom she named after her sister – Lady Anne Darcy. Consequently, based on her concern about her daughter's marriage life, she planned to marry her nephew, Fitzwilliam Darcy.
