Theory and Research
Research and theory are interdependent and build on each other. Research is necessary for addition or creation of new knowledge that informs theory. On the other hand, through theory new ideas or research questions are created which need to be tested via research. For example in the Bobo Doll Experiment by Albert Bandura in 1971 established sought to test the idea that children can learn aggression through observational learning. The findings indicated that children who observed the aggression model were more likely to imitate aggressive responses compared to those who were exposed to a non-aggressive model or the control group. This finding was generated by testing of theoretical ideas in research (McLeod, 2014). One of the limitations in the study is that demonstrations were measured almost immediately. It is not clear on whether a single exposure could have had long-term impact on the children (McLeod, 2014). To address this limitation, another study should be conducted. A prospect cohort study should be conducted over an extended period of time such as 10 or 20 years to determine whether exposure of child to aggressive behaviours can have long-term impacts or not (Rezigalla, 2020). Cohort is a type of observational study, in which a group sharing some common characteristics are followed over a given period of time. In which case, the outcomes will be measured at more or one time points (Wang & Kattan, 2020).
