Answer
How to Overcome the Challenges Facing Expatriates’ Adjustment Abroad
Introduction
The current paper presents an evaluation of an article on expatriates and the challenges they face overseas. The article under evaluation is “Determining the Challenges Encountered by Chinese Expatriates in Pakistan” by Noman, Safdar Sial, Vianna Brugni, Hwang, Yaseen Bhutto and Khanh.
Article Summary
In their article, Noman et al. (2020) sought to identify the challenges faced by expatriates in overseas countries, with particular focus on Chinese expatriates in Pakistan; and to determine the role that cross-cultural training plays in the adjustment of expatriates abroad and their success in international assignment. The research study followed qualitative approach as the research method and semi-structured interviews as the research design, during Chinese expatriates working in different Chinese companies in Pakistan were interviewed. The resulting data was analyzed using MAXQDA 18 and thematic analysis. The authors established that the key challenges and issues expatriates abroad include different time perceptions, language barrier, cultural differences and differences in work styles and environment. They concluded that these challenges can be surmounted by providing expatriates with rigorous training prior to leaving their home countries. The training should focus on such areas as language skills, adaptability skills, and more importantly, cultural awareness to help them overcome the effects of impending culture shock.
Article Analysis/Evaluation
This article is quite useful and more appropriate for comprehensive understanding of the experiences of expatriates abroad. The fact that the article written by six authors affiliated with various universities in China and Pakistan, and published in the Journal of Sustainability for peer reviewing in January 2020 means that it is authoritative, valid, authentic and current. The research article is also relevant because the issue of expatriates and the problems they face in the overseas countries, especially when it comes to cultural adjustment is increasingly a recurrent theme in many research studies in international HR management today (Brewster, Bonache, Cerdin & Suutari, 2014; Okpara, 2016). Moreover, the authors’ conclusion pointing to the need for language and cross-cultural training of expatriates before relocating abroad is consistent with findings of previous research studies. Notably, Okpara (2016) had also established that cross-cultural training is one of the key predicators of the adjustment of expatriates in foreign countries.
