Answer
Effects of Parenting Types on Children
The parenting method used by parents affects every aspect of a child’s development. It is capable of affecting how the child views the world and how they feel about themselves. Parents must consider how they raise their children and evaluate how their actions will influence their development until adulthood. There are four significant types of parenting; uninvolved, authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian. This paper reflects on the type of parenting style I experienced growing up and its effects on me as an adult and possibly my children.
Growing up with my parents was always a fulfilling experience. My parents emphasized rules in the house like eating vegetables much more frequently than meat because it was healthy, they were supportive, and if my siblings and I got into trouble, we would face severe consequences, specifically from my father. They were always reassuring, and at every point of development, they developed and maintained a constructive relationship with us.
My parents were always not on the same side when it came to how they raised us. My father was more of an authoritarian, and it was always his way, and nothing we said could change his mind. He made most decisions concerning school and discipline and discouraged any playing, receiving gifts, or taking part in any sport until we attained a particular grade in school. My mother was the gentle one, always finding ways to connect with us and encourage us by trying to explain that dad was acting in our best interests. She was the authoritative parent in the family. For the longest time, I could not take part in any sport in school.
From the two types of parenting types I experienced, I can confidently say I have developed and have become a responsible and disciplined individual. The several times my father made me sit in the house and do my schoolwork instead of playing with friends has significantly helped me excel in my studies. I can balance school life and extra curriculum activities with ease now. I have become self-conscious about how I treat and relate to others because my mother encouraged and reassured me after punishments and school failures.
Influence of my parents concerning how I will discipline my children
I would want to be an authoritarian parent who enforces rules with my children, and everyone has to abide by them without any question. I can create and maintain a positive relationship with my children and, at the same time, establish my authority in a healthier way. Always be able to reassure my children and try to be involved in their development by creating constructive relationships. In essence, I would aspire to impose both qualities of my parents on my children.
conclusively, parenting is not an easy task, especially in this age of technology where children prefer parenting from the internet or television. It is crucial for parents to always stay on top of situations in the house and enforce rules that will guide and protect their children as they develop. Parents can use more than one type of parenting style, they can at times be permissive and some other times be authoritative.
