    Title:

    Human Growth and Development

Human Growth and Development is the Course Name(PSY278)

    1  Genetic Research

The Human Genome Project has provided humankind with new information about genetic influences on behavior. To expand your knowledge of genetics, please visit the Human Genome Project website. Share with the class information from one of the “Fact Sheets – about genetic and genomic science.” Please address the following questions:

    • Do you support this research?  Or do you think the research is unethical?  Why?
    • How do you think this issue can help or hurt development in humans?

    2    Worksheet: Stem Cell Research

    Assignment Overview

Stem cell research is a controversial topic in the United States and the world. For this assignment, you will conduct research on stem cell research and determine and defend your position on the issue.

This assignment is intended for you to apply research and critical thinking skills to support an argument on a controversial issue and communicate effectively that position in writing.

    Assignment Details:

    Perform the following tasks:

    • Complete the reading assignment and the interactive lesson before attempting this assignment.
    • Complete the following:
      • Perform a search on the Internet or the online library (LIRN) for the terms “stem cell and research” or “stem cell and controversy.”
      • Based on your search, write an essay (approximately 100 to 150 words in length) in the space provided in the Assignment Worksheet section on the next page that gives three reasons to either:
        • Defend/support stem cell research.
        • Oppose it stem cell research.
    • Submit the Week 2 Assignment via Blackboard by clicking on the “Week 2 Assignment” link.
    • Include the proper file naming convention: PSY278_wk2_assn_jsmith_mm

3  Media Portrayal of Human Development

The technology and the media have played increasingly larger roles that may have affected our interpretation of physical development and perceptions. Please share your thoughts regarding how television shows portray physical characteristics across the lifespan. Select a current television show that you are familiar with and share your reflection about how the show portrays: children, adolescents, young adults, adults or older adults. Also, explain how our rapid changes in technology may have affected this portrayal over the last thirty years. Give specific examples of biological, psychological, or sociocultural factors that you see demonstrated in this show.

Note: They are 3 different assignments here. Not more than 150 words for each. And they should be on a different page. One page for each NOT more than 150 words Please!

Answer

GENETIC RESEARCH.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) was a project initiated in 1990 with the aim of shaping the string of nucleotide ignoble pairs that form the human gene(Noble,2008). Genome simply refers to a collection of all human genes.

I fully support this project because the findings of the HGP have enabled researchers comprehend the blueprint for creating a person. The functionality of genes and proteins, is becoming clearer to researchers and this information is impacting positively in the fields of life sciences and biotechnology. The sophistication of remedies to different challenges especially in medicine has been majorly aided by some of the findings of HGP (DeLisi,2008).

Through the study of   differences and similarities between human genetic factor and other organisms, researchers can learn the importance of particular genes hence discovering crucial genetic factors for survival, and deploy all their focus on preserving them. This is key in human development.

STEM CELL RESEARCH.

Stem Cells are nonspecialized cells which can potentially form other types of specific cells such as muscle, blood, tissue and brain cells. Before undertaking stem cell research, all scientists must consider the pros and cons of the research putting in consideration the research ethics involving the use, development and destruction of stem cells.

I support the research on stem cells. This cells have ability to generate into any body tissues and, as a result, can provide boundless possibilities for medical researches. Contemporary researches are exploring how stem cells can be of use in precluding or treating ailments and injuries like spinal cord injury, strokes, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, burns, muscular dystrophy, osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, type 1 diabetes, hearing and vision loss. These cells could also substitute or repair tissue destroyed by injury and disease.

As long as privacy and confidentiality of donors of the stem cells is upheld, then the cells should be used in developing of new therapies and tests. It would be a shame if stem cells found to be extremely helpful scientifically could not be used in additional research because the donor objected.

MEDIA PORTRAYAL OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Human development is the process of expanding the sense of freedoms and opportunities of people whilst refining their welfare. Ordinarily, people should decide how to live, what and where to be and what they want to do. It is biological, psychological or sociocultural process.

Media is not only about fashioning the feel-good, positive content as relates to human development, but both sides of the fence: the positives and the negatives. Social media is also on the rise in portraying the preferred physical aspects of human beings.

A case in point is the TV show, Game of Thrones, portrays disability not being an inability. Many of the show’s characters are disabled but they control the storyline. In 2013 the show won a Media Access Award in recognition of efforts in creating awareness of the disability experience. This show also depicts women in their various development stages. Women are portrayed as having minimum or no rights, sexual tools and as queens but only to a man. There are also women portrayed as unstoppable and holding immense power.
