How to cite and format references
For this course you will be using the name-author system of the Council of Science Editors. The examples below show how to do in-text citations and how to format the end reference, i.e. a full bibliographic reference for the list of references at the end of your written work.
In-text citations
- If a reference has a single author, the in-text citation is the author’s surname and the year of publication, usually in brackets, e.g. (Brown 2018). The in-text citation can be incorporated into the text in a number of ways depending on the writing style.
Brown (2018) reported an inverse relationship between obesity and vitamin A intake.
Retinoic acid regulates the expression of gene involved in lipid metabolism (Brown 2018).
While one study reported a link between vitamin A and obesity (Brown 2018), other studies found no relationship (Smith 2017, Barton 2016).
- Note: If it is clear from the writing that only a single reference is being discussed within a paragraph, than it is sufficient to cite the source once. A citation is not required at the end of every sentence. For example:
Brown (2018) investigated that relationship between vitamin A and obesity and found that persons with a higher body weight had a lower intake of Vitamin A. The author suggested that this may be due to the role that retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, plays in the expression of genes related to adipocyte metabolism. An inadequate Vitamin A intake would interfere with normal lipid metabolism, promoting an increase in body weight.
- If two studies have the same author and year of publication than cite as (Brown 2018a) and (Brown 2018b). Be sure that the “a” and “b” are incorporated into the list of references.
- If two studies have different authors with the same surname, use initials to distinguish: (Brown M 2018), (Brown D 2018)
- If a study has two authors, cite as (Brown and Smith 2017).
- If a study has three authors, cite as (Brown et al 2018).
- If a multi-authored study has the same first author, include the second author to distinguish (Brown, Smith et al 2018) vs (Brown, Gordon et al 2018)
References
- At the end of your assignment you should list all work cited.
- The full bibliographic references should be listed in alphabetical order, based on the first author.
- The full bibliographic reference for journal articles has the following format:
Cooperstone JL, Goetz HJ, Riedl KM, Harrison EH, Schwartz SJ, Kopec RE. 2017. Relative contribution of α-carotene to postprandial vitamin A concentrations in healthy humans after carrot consumption. Am J Clin Nutr. 106(1):59-66. doi: 10.3945/ajcn.116.150821.
- List the authors in the order in which they appear on the title page of an article. Never change this order.
How to cite and format references –Jan 2018
- List the first 10 names of a paper; if there are more than 10 names add “et al.”
- The first word of the journal title is capitalized; except for proper nouns, the remainder of the article title is written in lowercase. Retain all punctuation from the original title.
- Use the abbreviations for journal titles as found in the journal or abstract. If a journal abbreviation is not given find it by searching the PubMed list of journals: https://www-ncbi-nlm-nih-gov.myaccess.library.utoronto.ca/nlmcatalog/journals
- Include a volume number e.g 106; an issue number (1) if available; and the inclusive pages of the article: 59-66. For journals that are published only online a single paper number often replaces the volume and page numbers, e.g. e12.
- Many journals provide a link to the digital version of the article called a digital object identifier or DOI. If it is available it should be included in the reference. The DOI for the citation above is: 10.3945/ajcn.116.150821
- FYI: To use a DOI go to http://www.doi.org/ and follow the instructions on how to resolve a DOI name.

The Future of the Office Discussion
Since the reporting of the first case of Covid-19, global business organizations have experienced radical changes in operations. Notably, several organizations responded by shutting down their operations, followed by restricted opening where employees were asked to work from home (2). To understand our organization's situation, a discussion will be presented to analyze, synthesize and evaluate the future of the office following this pandemic period, then provide the current trends, workplace dynamics, and relate specific examples using personal illustrations. Thus, this paper will seek to identify and solve workplace problems resulting from Civil-19.
In reviewing the office's future, the theoretical argument of working from home is brought to light by the emergence of Covid-19. However, this was just the beginning of the endless debate for and against working from home. Companies such as Pinterest, Facebook, and Bloomberg developed several mechanisms to seek more office working space or benefits to employees who work from the offices (2). Similarly, different governments have followed suit in encouraging their employees to go back to work. 'But why?' this has been the key question by individuals trying to settle for working from home idea.
However, a contradicting argument is presented in support of working from home with a claim that it is a source of happiness to employees. According to findings obtained in the American Economist review, workers were setting for an 8% pay cut provided they could work from home (3). Explanations in support of this argument are that happy employees are satisfied by their work thus tend to be more innovative than when they are subjected to the monotony of the office. Some employees cited increased work output from home compared to when they worked from offices. From the two-arguments, it is not easy to establish and quantify this transition from offices, and the debate of working from office or homes continues to escalate.
A study by Nicholas Bloom indicated that employees working from home were more productive than workers enclosed in an office. This is true from my personal experience since it allows time for focus in a peaceful environment. Organizational advantages are also realized from more working hours and reduced off duty days that may not be felt. Thus, it is advantageous to an organization that chooses to focus its activities from the comfort of employees as it promotes specialization and globalization of business. Additionally, home offices enhance time-saving, thus promoting individual satisfaction while executing duties.
Although working from home has many advantages presented, there are also some drawbacks. Firstly, it is not easy to establish the quality of the work done. This is because some duties may require individuals' presence to attain quality. Secondly, a transition from offices to home may be expensive or face resistance from employees who have existed in the system for some time. Lastly, employees working from home lack job security and have a suspicion that they may be sacked. Thus, working from home remains a suggestion that will entail several processes even after the pandemic to realize its effectiveness.

Answer
Assessing Risk and Reward
The Nissan Motor Company is one of the leading automobile makers in the world. The Japanese carmaker has primarily enjoyed a successful run, allowing it to enter various regional and international markets such as the United States. However, the changing business environment was not favorable to the company in 2019. Notably, the cooperation recorded losses amounting to 7.8%. The experience pushed the management into making tough decisions, requiring almost all of its North American workforce to go for unpaid leaves.
In late 2019, the company announced that the decline in sales necessitated a two-day unpaid leave for the North American workers. The stated days for the vacation were January 2 and 3rd (Chicago Tribune, 2019). Notably, this move was a crucial decision for the company because of its conflicting impacts. Whereas on the positive side, it could help the firm minimize expenses, it threatened to affect the public perception of the company regarding employee welfare.
The rewards for the decision involved cutting expenses by not paying the workers on leave, which eventually would translate into reduced expenses. Another reward was that the decision could allow the company to optimize performance by evaluating employee performances then developing new milestones. However, on the low side, the company risked affecting its public image and brand name, especially in the North American market. As per Chakravorti (2010), the way an organization treats its employees influences the firm's public perception. Thus, Nissan risked eliciting a negative public perception. With a distorted public image, the company could fail to revive its declining sales.
I would have advised the management of Nissan to utilize the Predictive Analytic perspective in determining the right decision to take. Ideally, the approach tries to predict what might happen in the future if particular decisions or actions are undertaken at the moment (Traymbak & Aggarwal, 2019). Looking at the situation at Nissan, the company needed to develop a goal such as increasing sales. After that, they would have made decisions aimed at realizing the set goal. In this regard, the predicted outcome could give the management an overview of whether more risks existed or significant rewards could be realized.
