Answer
Implementing Intervention Strategies
Teachers must identify individual student weaknesses in order to come up with strategies that uniquely address their needs. Student intervention strategies in learning environments are critical in helping struggling learners create awareness potential. The direct instruction intervention strategy works well with students struggling with learning. The strategy entails engaging the student at an individual level with classroom concepts, defining terms, demonstration of activities, and using the right and effective tools to affirm concepts.
Implementation of direct instruction intervention strategy provides benefits to targeted students, including facilitation and encouragement of communication with the learner. It also improves the students’ ability to discuss their ideas and feelings with the teacher. Further, the strategy allows the teacher to understand the needs of the student better. It was necessary to include the intervention strategy as it was deemed pivotal in allowing teachers to tailor instructions to unique student needs. A study of Baltimore between 1996 and 2003 finds that schools implementing the direct instruction model achieved higher scores (Fredrickson, 2018). The data from Baltimore suggest that the direct instruction model achieves significantly higher scores within one year and is maintained over the six years of the study (Fredrickson, 2018). This formed the basis for the adoption of the direct instruction model.
The implementation of the direct instruction intervention strategy promoted the concept that all learners are teachable with correct approaches. All learners can improve academically and the need for teachers to uniquely address the needs of low performers. The outcomes of the strategy included increased student awareness of their abilities, improved student learning ability, and reduced interpretation of information taught.
Based on the evaluation of the mentor teacher, the direct instruction model achieves better outcomes when teachers strategically choose examples and non-examples to facilitate understanding. Teachers should anticipate common student misconceptions, remove distracting information, and highlight relevant content. In future utilization of this model, I will ensure that all details of instructions are controlled to student-specific needs, concerns, and ideas to eliminate misinterpretation.
