Interpersonal, Emotional, and Behavioral Characteristics of Psychopathy
Psychopathy is a personality disorder which is characterized by tenacious antisocial behavior, egotistical, remorse and bold, and disinhibited traits. One well known psychopath is Theodore Robert Bundy, famously known as Ted Bundy. Born on November 24, 1946, at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington, Vermont, Ted was an American sequential killer, rapist, kidnapper, and burglar who murdered and assaulted many young girls and women during the 1970s and perchance earlier. Psychopathy has certain characteristics which differentiate it from other personality disorders, and should be evidenced before declaring that one is psychotic. This paper, therefore, looks at interpersonal, emotional, and behavioral characteristics that Ted Bundy exemplified that suggest he was a psychopath.
One characteristic of psychopaths is that they are handsome and charming. This factor makes them lure people, especially women and kill them (Brazil & Forth, 2016). Most of Bundy's female victims viewed him as charismatic and handsome, which were characters he used to win their faith. He would characteristically approach them in public, faking injury or infirmity, or aping a powerful figure, before overwhelming and assailing them at isolated locations. It is difficult for women to turn down the proposal of handsome and remorse guys. After realizing that they are irresistible, psychopaths use that as an advantage.
Ted Bundy also had antisocial behaviors. These are conducts such as stealing, fighting, and causing violence where people are. Bundy started breaking into homes and cars in his high school times. His police records were obliterated at 18. It is well known that he was arrested two times on suspicion of robbery and auto-theft. He did not also participate in social activities as he was shy. Inability to make friends and participate in public activities forced him to transfer from University of Puget Sound to University of Washington.
Ted Bundy also lacked remorse or guilt. This a lack of concern or feelings of pain, the losses, and suffering of people, and a propensity to be undisturbed, unflustered, callous, and non-empathic (Brazil & Forth, 2016). After their reunion with brook, his girlfriend, he goes missing and does not pick her calls as a form of revenge. He does not care what others feel. Moreover, just before he was killed and after more than ten years of denials, he admitted to 30 killings that he did in more than seven states between 1974 and 1978. The factual victim counts are not known but is said to be much higher.
Psychopathy has got certain characteristics which differentiate it from other personality disorders. More often certain people have been portrayed as psychopath with little or no evidence. One of the people who has been portrayed as psychopath is Donald Trump, the president of the United States. According to the telegraph newspaper, Donald Trump outscore Hitler on psychopathic traits, which portrays Trump as a psychopath. This article is titled “Donald Trump outscores Hitler on psychopathic traits test, claims University of Oxford researcher” and can be retrieved from https://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/08/22/donald-trump-outscores-hitler-on-psychopathic-traits-test-claims/. I, however, do not agree with this article since it has not provided key characteristics that qualify one to be a psychopath.
