    Socialization is critical to individuals’ coexistence in their societies. It prepares individuals to take part in social groups by teaching them norms and expectations of the society.  Socializations has three major goals which include teaching impulse control and developing a conscience, preparing individuals to perform certain societal roles, and cultivating shared sources of meaning and value.  Based on the lecture notes about introduction to socialization, this paper describes four agents of socialization, and three types of impression managements and how they would be used in real-life situations.

    The first agent of socialization is family. This is a social group that is made up of parents and their children. It is basically a group of people who live together and share certain characteristics. Personally, being brought from a family that has more than ten members, I have enjoyed different values and opinions from diverse family members. The second agent of socialization is peers. These are friends that I have grown up with in the same neighborhood and school, and we have shared a variety of issues. Through peers, I have come to learn values and norms of certain cultures since I happen to be in groups of different cultures and origin. The third agent of socialization is school.  A school is an educational establishment that is premeditated to provide learning environments for teaching students. I can attest that this is one of the most important agents of socialization where one gets educated by teachers and also find friends from different backgrounds to share certain values. Through school, I have learned a lot of issues that pertain to information about different cultures, people, and communities. The last important agent of socialization is mass media.  These include news articles, television programming, videos, films, internet sites, and magazines.  Mass media currently connects millions of people irrespective of their geographical locations.  Therefore, it is one of the most powerful channel through which I have learnt values, characteristics, and norms of certain cultures, individuals, and religion.

    Impression management, also known as self-presentation, is the subconscious or conscious process in which individuals attempt to sway others' view about an object, a person, or an event by controlling and regulating information in social interactions. There are three types of self-presentations: authentic, ideal, and tactical self-presentations. Authentic self-presentation creates an image that is consistent with one’s views. These are views that one believes in, and it does not depend on other people’s views.  I would use this type of self-presentation to persuade or inform people about my beliefs. Ideal self-presentation is the most appropriate public image of our ideal self. This is about what is right, and it does not depend on one’s perception but what is right to the public. I would use this to let people know how I want them to be. The last type of impression management is tactical presentation.  It is a public image that is favorable regardless of whether it is authentic or ideal.  I can use tactical presentation in situations or environments where I want to please people. It is widely used to remain relevant by supporting a situation or a person even when it is contrary to one’s belief. Based on the three types of self-presentation, I would use ideal impression management since it is based on reality instead of one’s beliefs or an attempt to please other people.
