- QUESTION
1) How are Brazilian Japanese immigrants stereotyped in Japan? What does this tell us about how ethnic/national identity functions to influence people's relations in society? Are there tensions between the idea of being an “American” and having certain cultural backgrounds (language, religion, etc.) in the U.S.? Explain your arguments, and use examples.
2) According to "Is Race Real", why isn't the idea of race based on meaningful biological differences? How does race function as a social/cultural thing instead? Building from this, how does this shed any light on recent movements for racial justice in the U.S., for example, or movements supporting white supremacy or white nationalism by contrast? In light of the recent protests after the death of George Floyd? Explain with examples.

Answer
“Is Race Real”
Question 1
Brazilian Japanese immigrants are stereotyped in Japan because they have a distinct manner of dress, speech and demeanor which is not typical in Japan (Tsuda, 2004). Even though this group of people are of Japanese descent, they are considered “traitors” due to the fact that the Japanese media largely portrays them as weak people who ran away from Japan in the middle of an economic crisis only to come back when things got better (Tsuda, 2004). Similarly, tensions surround the idea of being an “American” with certain cultural backgrounds. For example, an American boy born to Japanese parents and raised in America may have the mannerisms and speech typical of the Japanese. Even though this boy is American, he would mostly be seen as Japanese due to his skin, speech and mannerisms.
Question 2
According to “Is Race Real?,” the idea of race is not based on meaningful biological differences because race has little to do with the genetic make-up of a person. There is no scientific explanation for the belief that our race is defined by our DNA (Goodman, 2000). For instance, because sickle cell anemia is more common among people of African descent, some scientists have argued that the genetic make-up of people of African descent is what predisposes them to the disease.
“Is Race Real,” however, sheds light on the fact that these people typically originate from certain geographical locations and lead certain types of lives. Race is in fact real but it is more of a social/cultural construct perpetuated over centuries than a genetic thing (Goodman 2000). Recent movements for racial justice in the U.S are, therefore, important because they illuminate the economic, health and societal disadvantages experienced by non-Euro-American individuals as a result of “race”. Further, there is no scientific evidence that supports the idea that the “white race” is biologically different from the others. Movements like Black Lives Matter continue to agitate for this realization even as George Floyd recently died in what appears to be a racial incident.
