Answer
Career Development in Healthcare
A career in healthcare comes with an array of demands which require a delicate balance for success. The ability to strike such a balance calls for more than meeting a specific career’s educational requirements as to possess other capabilities including excellent communication and people skills, flexibility, risk-taking attributes, and among others. This paper draws insight from some interviewed health professionals to demonstrate that success in healthcare does not depend solely on educational qualification but also relies on other capabilities.
Erica Horseman*, a modern matron, entered the healthcare arena through a Nursing Diploma after quitting the disciplined forces following inspiration from her sister. She acquired a Transcultural Psychiatry master’s degree and later joined a private medical facility as unit manager, gaining experience in financial management. She has brought these skills to her current position where she works with a multidisciplinary team. Her interpersonal and communication skills have been integral to her success, and these would be highly recommended to be emulated by any individual aspiring to take up such a career.
From early childhood, Martin O’Neill*, wanted to become a nurse. He is now a community nurse. His nursing degree placement made him realize that his passion lay in community nursing. Through it he earned experience and skills like critical thinking to teamwork and good people skills. He has been working as a community nurse and is currently studying part-time for a degree to become community specialist practitioner. His competence is anchored on people skills as well as leadership and management as emphasized in literature such as Sfantou et al. (2017) and Wagner (2018). Anyone aspiring to take Martin’s career path would be advised to be keen on these concepts.
As for Laura Collins, she studied adult nursing (undergraduate) and entered practice providing direct care to patients in a neurosurgery facility. Keen on continuous learning, she developed teamwork skills, flexibility, and other nurse leadership attributes. She would later be promoted to neuroscience nurse practitioner. The mix of skills she acquired in her first role has been integral to her success. For a person aspiring to be in this field, the leadership and management qualities as discussed by Sfantou et al. (2017) are emphasized.
In conclusion, examining the stories about the career paths of the healthcare professionals interviewed leaves no doubt that the ability to strike a balance between the various demands of the healthcare work environment requires more than meeting a specific career’s educational requirements as to possess other capabilities including excellent communication and people skills, flexibility, risk-taking attributes, and leadership among others.
