Non-White Rock Artists
Carlos Humberto Santana Barragan is a Mexican American guitarist who was born July 20, 1947. Santana rose to fame during the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band Santana, which discovered a fusion of “rock n roll” and Latine American Jazz. Santana’s music featured his melodic, blues-based lines against Latin American rhythms played on percussion instruments, not ordinarily hard rock, such as congas and timbales (Barrios, 2020). Through his unique music style, Carlos Santana experienced a resurgence of fame and significant recognition during the late 1990s. Researches indicate that by the late 1960s, rock had become a genre that was almost dominated by white artists. The famous non-white rock artist, Carlos Santana, is considered a prominent figure which significantly influenced rock and roll’s emergence and evolution. According to Bell (2019), Santana moved to San Francisco, where he meets famous figures such as Little Richard, King, and Charles. They significantly influenced his musical recognition and encouraged him to become a full-time musician and create his band named Santana Blues in 1966.
Santana gained immediate recognition and success, which allowed him to sign a recording contract with Columbia Records. Regardless of the frequent personnel alterations within the band, Santana achieved enormous success and reached different people’s hearts producing unique musical sounds and pieces about intense feelings (Barrios, 2020). In 1970, inspired by a spiritual leader, Santana created an original type of spirituality-oriented music featured in his album named Love Devotion Surrender in 1973. Conclusively, Carlos Santana is one of the prominent recognized non-white rock artists. He has been awarded various awards, such as Lifetime Achievement Award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, and in 2013 he received a receipt of the Kennedy Center Honors (Bell, 2019). Carlos Santana’s music can be characterized as autonomous melodies, a blend of different sounds and rhymes, professionalism, and vocal power, which portrays significant spiritual features, uniqueness, and originality.
