Leadership in the Public Sector

Leadership involves a type of responsibility meant at achieving particular goals by using both human and material available resources and ensuring unified and coherent organization in the process. From the perspective of employees, leadership is comprised of everything a leader does that affects the achievement of objectives and the well-being of employees and the organization (Pierce, 2006). Leaders has a great role in shaping the destinies of their organizations in an apparent direction and in the lives of people the lead therefore leadership styles should be designed to fit organizations, situations, groups, and individuals. Over time, researchers have proposed many different styles and theories of leadership as there is no particular style or theory that can be considered universal (Avolio, 1995).   Theories are mainly structured according to leadership nature, for example; the ones that focuses on leader characteristics called trait theory, theory based on leader behavior or situational model and theories that present new leadership style known as transformational theories.

Trait theory is one of the theories that depicts characteristics of an individual. Scholars have tried to define those features that make a person an effective leader in Trait Theory. They tried to identify some physical, personality, and intellectual traits of effective leaders (Brian, 2015). They identified many such like significant characteristics, regularly showing a connection between these traits and effective management, and leadership characteristics of various sorts have remained an important element of leadership research. Explanation on some people who possess the same traits considered leadership traits but are not leaders have made researchers to go ahead for more explanations for effective leadership.

Charismatic leadership is a behavioral leadership theory type involves getting-together of followers through indent of behavior and attraction rather than any form of outside power. It usually defines expectations from both leaders and followers in any given set up. The theory describes what to be expected from both leaders and followers (Derue, 2011). charismatic leaders motivate their teams to move forward by inspiring followers’ eagerness on a given task. Ensuring excitement and commitment to followers will most probably results into high productivity and goal achievement.

Fiedler’s theory is a leadership theory under transformational theory that put more emphasis on an individual leadership style and organizational setting. It states that any type of leadership style can be effective, depending on whether it properly matches the situations a leader faces in an organization (Avolio, 1995). According to the theory, the key elements determining effective leadership are; leader-follower relations, duty structure, and powers of the leader. Here, no leadership style singled to be the best, therefore Achievement rest upon situational approaches

In conclusion, leaders are the corner stone for organizational and team development. They should have full influence to followers to accomplish any given goal and objective. Analysis of leadership theories and approaches shows a progression from one theory to another and there is no each theory that fully certified all that effective leadership requires. These methods and theories therefore provides an important view of leadership and incorporates wide variety of constituents like problem solving skills, social judgement skills, and structures.
