Legalizing Euthanasia in Canada
Euthanasia or physician-assisted dying is already being practiced in regions where it is illegal. According to the 2004 to 2007 survey by Clive Seale (a researcher at the University of Toronto), there exist a considerable number (nearly 1000) incidences of voluntary euthanasia yearly within Canada (Emanuel et al., 2016). Such practices occur as a result of a few compassionate medics who are willing to assist their critically ill patients to die with honor (Emanuel et al., 2016). For this reason, I raise the question: why not legalize euthanasia in Canada for it is already being practiced in the country? My answer is a resounding no.
In my view, I believe that euthanasia degrades the disabled. I trust that the most frequently demanded reason for physician-assisted death is not pain but rather incapacitation, and this is undoubtfully a concerning matter to society. Therefore, this would mean that disability equals indignity, which portrays a demeaning thought for the rest of the Canadian citizens who are incapacitated.
Bill C-14, which was passed by the Canadian Parliament in 2016 June, revised the Criminal Code of Canada to legitimize both the physician-assisted suicide (PAS) as well as the physician-assisted euthanasia (PAE) and to manage the accessibility to both processes within the country (Emanuel et al., 2016). In light of these laws, I believe that they are unconstitutional since they deny the Canadian citizens the right to have control over decisions that are crucial to their psychological, emotional and physical dignity. It is also my firm opinion that these laws limit the freedom of the physicians to provide end of life care (palliative care) to terminally ill patients. Therefore, given the above illustrations, I reason that euthanasia in Canada should not be legalized.
