Legalizing Illegal Drugs for the Purpose of Revenue
The prohibition of certain drugs in the market has not done much with regards to reducing the use and abuse in specific populations. That is why there are a lot of individuals who are currently in prison after being implicated for illegal drug sale and use. The illegal drug market tends to earn too much revenue, despite the prohibitions that have been put in place (Watson, 2016). This show that peopwill benefit the Current Economy
Given the current situation, the illegal drug sellers are earning a lot of revenue which enables them to expand their territories. As such, countries are experiencing a constantly expanding illegal drug market. It is evident that the revenue that is circulating in this illegal market is quite high. If the government could have access to this revenue, it would enable it to improve the economy further since some financial shortages will be dealt with (Burns, 2019). Therefore, the illegal drugs should be made legal and be taxed heavily as it is clear that the demand for the products is quite high.
The people who really want the drugs will need to part with a considerable amount of money in the legal market just as they do in the illegal market. It is predicted that a majority will prefer the legal market as long as the prices set are not higher than in the illegal market. In the illegal market, there is no one regulating the prices, which is why some may be charged high amounts (“Charity warns that ‘legal high’ ban has led to switch to other illegal drugs”, 2017). However, the legal market will feature reasonable prices, but the taxation should be heavily given the fact that users will not mind spending the extra amount of the drugs they require.
Legalizing some of the Illegal Drugs will reduce Crime Rates
Most of the violence which occurs in the illegal market is due to the high financial benefits associated with the trade. However, if the people can get access to the same drugs in the legal market, regulations will ensure that no individual will want to benefit at the expense of others. In addition, since the prices will be the same, many will prefer the legalized version. This will see to it that the drug traffickers lose their loyal customers since they will no longer see a need of risking their freedom in case they get caught (Oglesby, 2017). In return, the economy will also benefit from the heavy taxes that will be imposed on these products. Therefore, legalizing some drugs will ensure that crime is reduced as the drug traffickers will not have anything left to come to conflict about (Williams et al., 2016). Crime is often costly as it leads to destroyed property, loss of valuables, and even the loss of lives. Therefore, the saved costs can be channelled towards improving the economy.
Conclusion
The benefits of legalizing some of the illegal drugs is quite visible. That is because the measures taken towards prohibiting them have not proven successful. There are illegal markets which are greatly benefiting from the revenue earned through the illegal trade. Therefore, it is better for the government to legalize the drugs and heavily tax them so that these illegal markets are destroyed while the government benefits from the high revenue that will be earned. In return, drug users will get safe versions of the drugs that have not been altered in any way.
