Answer

Legislative Field Trip

I attended a committee hearing where the committee started at 9:30 a.m., in Room 2536 Longworth House Office Building with Hon. Nydia Velazquez as the chairperson of the committee that is presiding. People in attendance included Vela’zquez, Altmire, Cuellar, Clarke, Hirono, Chabot, Gohmert and Fallin. During this hearing, the issue at hand was about food prices and small business. An opening statement was made by the chairperson (Hon. Nydia Velazquez) who call the hearing to order saying that American citizens see constant intensifications in the price of food items. The committee discussed the relationship between the cost of foodstuff and the whole economic chain from farm to the grocer, to homes, and the restaurants. They also explored various aspects contributing to the increase in the cost of food products as well as examine a particular effect on family agronomists and businesspersons.

Major points discussed in the hearing included how a number of upsetting growths are coming to a head concurrently. For beginners, increasing joblessness and upshot from the subprime loan crisis have left the economy in a declining situation. This generates a harsh setting for businesses to thrive. Customers have a less nonrefundable salary, and narrowing credit markets make it hard for small companies to acquire capital. During this hearing, a position was taken by Hon. Nydia Velazquez that the challenge is compounded by the increasing worldwide demand for agricultural foods. This is because developing economies are putting tensions on productions and weather-related production scarcities of various products, including wheat and rice, among others making the food products to be very much expensive for every individual. High consumption of grains has also led to an increase in agricultural food price hence affecting small business. According to my personal view about the hearing, the position made by the chairperson is factual, and indeed when the demand is too high, a commodity becomes expensive for citizens to afford. Furthermore, a helping hand needs to be given to the farmers to increase the production of various agricultural foods.

From a social worker’s perspective, I learnt from the hearing that farmers need support for the production of better agricultural foods. Additionally, a focus on the root cause of these problems leading to increase in food price needs to be made to formulate and implement a solution that can allow the market to reestablish its economic capability. Implications of failure to find a solution to the problem might lead to the suffering of people within the globe. Additionally, the issues posed by such a dramatic amalgamation of issues is significant, though they are not insuperable. As history has confirmed every time and again, a Country’s small business economy is unusually resilient, and business people can assist such a country to get things back normality or track.
