    Purpose

The concepts of epidemiology provide the framework for the study of infectious and chronic health issues/diseases, which provides a rich source of data for the analysis of trends in disease and health. This assignment will offer the learner the opportunity to explore the population health effects of a topic which will be assigned by your course faculty.

As an example, you may be asked to identify populations at risk for oral health issues or, for instance, issues related to the frail living at home, and design a population health focused educational intervention for your target population.

In addition, you will look at what outcomes will be addressed to determine if your interventions are effective.  This paper should integrate HP2020 and CDC information into your paper.

    Activity Learning Outcomes

Through this assignment, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

    1. Identify appropriate outcome measures and study designs applicable to epidemiological sub-fields such as infectious disease, chronic disease, environmental exposures, reproductive health, and genetics. (CO3)
    2. Identify important sources of epidemiological data. (CO6)

    Total Points Possible: 125

Answer

  1. LGBTIA Health

Healthcare providers' concern is on the well-being of society, focusing on people of all ages. Consequently, the focus is on meeting the goals of Healthy People 2020 (HP2020), where the lesbians, gays, and bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals are considered in ensuring that they can manage rising health concerns. However, some health conditions such as infectious diseases or genetic disorders have negatively affected the goals of providing better health to society. This paper will review breast cancer patients aged 65 years and above on how they are affected by this condition leading to the slow attainment of HP 2020 goals. Further, the paper will provide insight into the education interventions to manage data on individuals' wellness within this study group.

About the Oxford University statistics, breast cancer is the second most fatal disease in the US that has claimed 10 million lives in the past two years. Generally, this condition is known to affect all gender, but according to this data, this condition was reported to be adverse among lesbians, while gays have reported an increasing trend in the same study period (MacGowan et al. 2019). Statistics conducted in selected cities of Ohio, Minnesota, and Maryland indicate that the most vulnerable in these regions express up to about 60% of the total number of individuals infected. Additional research by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), both black and white females are affected by cancer at the same rates while blacks' mortality rates tend to be higher than the whites. The reasons behind these trends are traced back to age, lifestyle, and financial ability to access better health care. Community creation of awareness and campaigns are recommended as the best practices to attain the themes of HP 2020 and its agenda.

The CDC's data indicate that breast cancer the most common disease among US women, with a rate of three victims for every ten women screened for the condition. Based on this trend, the year 2019 was characterized by 268,600 cases reported in 2019, while the males had reported only 2,670 cases, which are much lower than women. The report shows that the positivity rate for breast cancer is at 13% among the females, while for the males, it is at about 2.8 positivity rate (Pagahiannis et al., 2019). The most devastating trend of this condition is that from the total cases reported, women have the highest mortality rate of 42,000 annually while their male counterparts had 15 deaths from the disease (Henley et al. 2020). This trend is because of a lack of awareness of preventive and management measures for LGBT health management concerns.

Although breast cancer has claimed several lives in society, the HP 2020 goals provide four primary points to achieve its mandates. According to HP 2020, society needs individuals with high-quality lives, low mortality rates, and the ability to manage preventable health conditions (de Souto Barreto et al., 2020). Secondly, the goals seek to promote equality in accessing health services, reduce disparity, and improve health among all social groups. Thirdly, Healthy People 2020 goals are focused on improving the human environment to facilitate good health and effective management of health conditions. While oral health is a center of focus in HP 2020, chronic illness is also given equal consideration based on society's effects. The general objective is to prevent and manage chronic conditions among individuals by improving access to services and creating an enabling environment that treats and helps manage the individuals faced with these diseases.

Age is becoming a significant challenge for the management of chronic conditions among individuals in modern society. To address challenges the elderly face in meeting the HP 2020 goals, there is a need to develop a strategic approach that will promote better healthcare goals and objectives (Pereira et al., 2020). Firstly, there is a need to review the existing interventions used to manage these conditions among individuals aged 65 years and above. Secondly, there is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of a given intervention in system adaptability to the target group and prevent mortality rates when this condition is faced. In designing a better intervention approach, there is a need to consider a method that includes both health promotion and chronic disease control mechanisms that will eventually ensure that an individual has relevant knowledge on what they are suffering from and the need to practice a healthy lifestyle while understanding that all conditions can be managed. Thus, health education, behavior control, and proper communication between caregivers and the elderly affected by chronic conditions need to be adequately addressed to attain the objectives of HP 2020. In conclusion, Healthy People 2020 covers a population of different types of people and entails a mixed method that addresses various issues related to a chronic condition.

Answer

Assessing Risk and Reward

The Nissan Motor Company is one of the leading automobile makers in the world. The Japanese carmaker has primarily enjoyed a successful run, allowing it to enter various regional and international markets such as the United States. However, the changing business environment was not favorable to the company in 2019. Notably, the cooperation recorded losses amounting to 7.8%. The experience pushed the management into making tough decisions, requiring almost all of its North American workforce to go for unpaid leaves.

In late 2019, the company announced that the decline in sales necessitated a two-day unpaid leave for the North American workers. The stated days for the vacation were January 2 and 3rd    (Chicago Tribune, 2019).  Notably, this move was a crucial decision for the company because of its conflicting impacts. Whereas on the positive side, it could help the firm minimize expenses, it threatened to affect the public perception of the company regarding employee welfare.

The rewards for the decision involved cutting expenses by not paying the workers on leave, which eventually would translate into reduced expenses. Another reward was that the decision could allow the company to optimize performance by evaluating employee performances then developing new milestones. However, on the low side, the company risked affecting its public image and brand name, especially in the North American market. As per Chakravorti (2010), the way an organization treats its employees influences the firm's public perception. Thus, Nissan risked eliciting a negative public perception. With a distorted public image, the company could fail to revive its declining sales.

I would have advised the management of Nissan to utilize the Predictive Analytic perspective in determining the right decision to take. Ideally, the approach tries to predict what might happen in the future if particular decisions or actions are undertaken at the moment (Traymbak & Aggarwal, 2019). Looking at the situation at Nissan, the company needed to develop a goal such as increasing sales. After that, they would have made decisions aimed at realizing the set goal. In this regard, the predicted outcome could give the management an overview of whether more risks existed or significant rewards could be realized.
