LUTI Model Discussions
Urban system planners and designers have come up with a number of transportation land use models in an attempt to represent complex urban dynamics. Among the Land Use and Transport Interaction (LUTI) models in use today, the salient ones include the Lowry model, Cellular Automata (CA) model, Agent-based Modelling (ABM), UrbanSim, SILO, ILUTE, and the ILUMASS model. While these have various characteristics and components in common, they differ in a number of ways as discussed in the following section.
Similar Components in the LUTI Models
The five LUTI models (Lowry, CA, ABM, UrbanSim, SILO, ILUTE, and ILUMASS) have four components in common; namely, land use, transport system, economy and population. What each model does is to attempt to look at how these four components interact dynamically to make up an urban system. For instance, population determines the size of the economy, which in turn influences development of transportation infrastructure that ultimately impacts land use. Similarly, developed transportation systems attract investments in the region, which consequently improves the region’s economy, in terms of increased prices of land and real estate, as well as attracts more residents to work as employees in the new businesses and firms.
How the LUTI Models Differ from Each Other
The LUTI models differ in terms of the way they integrate environmental impact in urban planning. Notably, the Lowry, Cellular Automata, ABM, and SILO models do not integrate the environment in urban systems modelling. In comparison, UrbanSim, ILUTE, and ILUMASS models attempt to look at the impacts of land use and transport systems on the environment such as traffic noise, GHG emissions, visual impairments, air pollution, and aesthetics among other impacts. This way, the models ensure that the modelled complex urban systems have the element of sustainability by incorporating measures to minimize the environmental impacts of land use, economic activities and transport.
