    Assessment Overview

This written assignment is to be presented in the form of a blog. Students will provide a

critical analysis of a health topic or issue constructed as an academic-style blog post. Your

post can be based on any issue covered under Concepts of Health for Social Work Practice –

Health as a social issue in global and local contexts, Public Health, Health Promotion, and

Social Determinants of Health, Social health as a characteristic of individuals, families, and

communities, Health and Social Justice. For example: Access to Prep is a social justice and

public health issue, Body shaming: How social workers address bullying, Smoking in

marginalized communities: A social worker’s response

Your task is to create a well-referenced, academically-informed, and yet still approachable

piece. You are targeting agency placement colleagues who may not know much about your

topic or College students, in particular social work peers in the early stages of their education.

Weblogs …Blogs allow you reference news that you see on the internet and link to that news.

Additionally, you provide your own commentary and analysis of the issue as well as engage

in a dialog with other visitors. As a genre, blogs are more informal and immediate than most

other forms of technical writing. The purpose of this assignment is to use that informality, as

well as the capacity for linking to a variety of online media, to encourage you to think

reflectively about an aspect of social work and health. This may be a topic being discussed in

the class or one you want to explore. The assessment requires you to engage more thoroughly

with the topic while communicating your learning in a format that you may utilize in your

    professional lives.

In this assignment, I am asking you to write a blog post for students based on the concepts

you have read about throughout the semester. Here is some more information about the

assignment. Each of the features is a criterion that I will use to assess your blog post.

Content:1-  You should focus on the information that you think would be most useful to

inform your reader of the topic. Content is complete, accurate, relevant, AND offers new ideas. Clear

evidence of going beyond material covered in class.

    1. Visual Appeal: The blog post should be readable and visually appealing. Using relevant original

(that you take), hand-drawn (that you create) or stock pictures for the post.

or other media source that continues the discussion of the topic.

    1. Title: Please think of an engaging title to attract readers!
    2. Length: Your blog post should be approximately 750 words long (+/- 25 words, not

    including the ref list).

    1. Writing Quality: While this format is more informal spelling and grammar are important. For each

error a point will be deducted. More than five errors scores a zero for the criterion. Additionally, the

style should be engaging and appropriately colloquial.

    marks.

    1. Evidence The blog should be grounded in empirical evidence. Please include information from at

suggestions you make need to be directly related to scientific evidence from scholarly work, which

    should be properly cited.

Managing Diabetes in the Aboriginal Community

The Aboriginal community in Australia is one of those populations with the highest rates of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. Additionally, according to Minges et al. (2011), the community members suffer heavily from the complications resulting from the condition such as cardiovascular diseases and stroke. People from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community experience various forms of barriers such as linguistic, cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic challenges which limit their access to both education and other diabetes-related services (Javanparast et al., 2018). Just like other chronic conditions, individuals and families in the Aboriginal community are disproportionately affected by diabetes compared to the population in urban centers (Minges et al., 2011). Social workers have an instrumental role to play in ensuring the communities receive the necessary support for diabetes as well as education and related services. Social work role of providing education on healthy food choices and lifestyle changes serves to reduce the impact of diabetes on the Aboriginals. However, in my role as a social worker, I have encountered a significant number of people who do not understand and appreciate the role of social workers in the management of diabetes in marginalized communities.

Harris et al. (2017) argue that social workers work in unison with the community leaders to identify the individuals and families who are at increased risk of diabetes and implement comprehensive and evidence-based programs which address factors which have an impact on health. In specific, the practitioners engage in programs aimed at ensuring increased access to nutritious foods which are devoid of high calories. Additionally, they offer options for physical activities and collaborate with both health care and non-health care practitioners in addressing both the social and environmental factors which affect vulnerable populations (Javanparast et al., 2018). The services of social workers can be seen in not only the healthcare facilities but also in various community programs and centers as they aim to ensure a healthy and safer Aboriginal community.

Figure: Educational Poster on Diabetes.

One of the issues which have resulted in the disproportionate rates of diabetes in the aboriginal community is the lack of awareness on the importance of healthy food choices and physical activity. Social workers have been vital in ensuring that the people in the community are educated on how they can desert their lifestyle behaviors and lead healthy lives. Additionally, social workers have underscored the importance of physical exercise not just for the adults, but also for children (Harris et al., 2017). Such programs have had tremendous changes in the community. In specific they have led to a shift from the consumption of binge foods and the making of healthy food choices. I have felt elated when I see community members being health conscious and understanding that their health depends on their food choices as well as the levels of physical activity. Educational programs involving different visuals have deterred people in the community from engaging in unhealthy lifestyles.

Figure 2: Healthy Foods for Diabetes Management.

Individuals with diabetes in the marginalized communities have a disproportionately high rate of mental health problems. Such mental health issues include depression, anxiety, and even eating disorders (Durey et al., 2016). Social workers have recognized this problem and thus come in to ensure that the aboriginal community has access to psychological treatment and support with the aim of reducing the rates of psychological distress as well as ensuring that they improve the self-management of depressive conditions. The provision of psychosocial support has been instrumental in alleviating some of the adverse effects such as feelings of unworthiness and low self-esteem (Egan & Kadushin, 2007). Through the interventions provided by social workers, I have witnessed a wide array of benefits to individuals with diabetes. People have led healthy lives whereas their self-confidence and esteem have been enhanced out of the actions of social workers.

Individuals and families in the Aboriginal community should effectively use the available services of social workers to ensure that they get an understanding of ways that they can manage their diabetic conditions. Although some of the initiatives endeavoring to ensure effective management of diabetes and the reduction of its adverse effects have not been successful, the role of social work and importance is visible in the various health promotion campaigns and educational programs. Social work; just like healthcare, is a pertinent filed in ensuring a reduction in health disparities between those living in urban areas and the marginalized communities. However, more training is required for social workers even to make them better equipped to work with the Aboriginal community and address their vulnerabilities.
