                Pursuing a master’s degree in nursing is regarded as one of the most effective considerations for any nurse to advance in the profession. When a nurse is masters prepared, he/she can secure employment in managerial positions or other competitive posts. Notably, nursing is a versatile profession with varied options to pursue as a higher education. This paper presents a Master’s prepared nurse interview detailing aspects such as the overview of the nurse’s career, the reason for furthering the nursing education, and the description of the current role in the field. With an aim of safeguarding the interviewee’s confidentiality, the nurse will be referred to as “AG,” a pseudonym name.

Overview of the Master’s Prepared Nurse’s Career

                AG initially obtained a master’s degree in perinatal women’s health after graduating from Stony Brook University located in Long Island. After the two-year course, AG decided to study a post master’s degree in pediatrics and further secured employment as a pediatric nurse practitioner. In this work environment, AG works in a private practice office whereby she sees patients three days a week.

Seeking Graduate Education and Usefulness in the Current Role

                One must be a master’s degree holder to secure employment as a nurse practitioner. Additionally, it is a requirement to have the basic required licenses to venture in the career. AG is currently studying to obtain the pediatric mental health certification besides holding one in MO and KS. Seeking graduate education was one of the interviewee’s considerations to be competitive in the nursing field. AG mentions that becoming a graduate has functioned effectively in making her secure a competitive position in employment in the field of nursing. The graduate education is useful in the interviewee’s present role as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Holding a master’s degree exposed AG whereby she can secure employment as a nurse practitioner, one of the most highly paying jobs in the field of nursing. According to the Springer Publishing Company (2021), a nurse practitioner is listed among the top 20 best-paying employment openings for women with an estimated median annual wage of $ 80,000 alongside a mean yearly wage of more than $100,000. Naturally, holding a higher-level degree suggests that one will secure a competitive job opening with limited responsibilities and higher payment. Working on a fulltime basis, a nurse practitioner can earn approximately $105,546 (Springer Publishing Company, 2021). This suggests a high return on investment for the nurse practitioners in comparison to other professions. The master’s degree is also useful in the current role since it improves on the nurse’s competitiveness through a great demand of the nurse practitioners with a master’s degree in the US and globally (Springer Publishing Company, 2021).

Present Position Description and Role

                AG’s present role includes that of a primary care pediatric nurse practitioner. The nurse works 3 days a week whereby she completes 12-hour work shifts. In her present role, AG is provided with the opportunity of seeking children who are a few days old and engages in sessions whereby she makes sick visits to see acute care patients.

A pediatric nurse practitioner plays the role of offering high quality care and compassionate nursing services to children from birth up to the age of 21 (Nurse Practitioner, 2020). In addition, the pediatric nurses work in varied settings including physician offices, health care clinics, and focus on health promotion, disease prevention and on family education on desirable care plan (Hanks, Kristen & Stafford, 2018). Some of the specific services offered by the pediatric nurse include developmental screenings, childhood immunizations, child wellness examinations, and medication prescriptions among others. The nurses work alongside other healthcare providers and pediatricians. Moreover, they can take part in home visits, and because of their high graduate-level education, they will be involved in desirable leadership roles and research with a focus on affecting public policy (Ying & Orna, 2016).

Pearls of Wisdom

                AG shows no regrets in further her nursing studies to secure a nursing degree. As a result, the nurse was willing to share several pearls of wisdom such as “learning is a great opportunity. Always take the opportunity to learn new things. Put your best foot forward and always listen to your patients”.

Conclusion

                Conclusively, collaboration and interpersonal communication is one of the competencies that are evident in the interview. This competency is in-line with the AACN essentials. Noticeably, the pediatric nurse professional has the responsibility of acting in collaboration with pediatricians alongside other care professionals for the effective delivery of services. The interview served an educational purpose for me in that I understood the benefits of furthering nursing education to a master’s degree level. For instance, I learned that with the master’s training, I can secure competitive and well-paying jobs in the field alongside enhancing my skills and capabilities to achieve desirable patient outcomes.
