Master’s-Prepared Nurse Interview
The advancement of education by nurses is meant to offer them additional skills for their career development. The added competencies obtained during a master’s course ensure that nurse practitioners are better prepared for the challenges that face the profession (Iglehart, 2013). I conducted an interview with a nurse practitioner and a master's prepared in nursing to get an overview of her current position and ways graduate education she is pursuing will be relevant to her present role. The interview selected was an unstructured one, which allowed for informal and free-flowing questions. Additionally, some of the issues were developed during the conversation.
Overview of the Master’s-Prepared Nurse’s Career
The master's prepared nurse started her career in 2010 immediately after graduation. She has worked in several healthcare facilities from where she has obtained various skills and competencies. As a nurse practitioner, the interviewee has been dealing with children and adults. The three different healthcare facilities have offered her various challenges, which have necessitated an advancement of her studies through graduate education.
Reasons for Seeking Graduate Education
One of the reasons as to why the interviewee wants to pursue graduate education is to increase her specialization. Specifically, she intends to develop her skills further and be able to assume leadership positions, which will eventually contribute to health and wellbeing of the community. The second reason is for her to fill in the gaps, as there is an increasing demand for registered nurses with a master’s degree (Naylor & Kurtzman, 2010). The need for more money was the third reason for the interviewee to seek graduate education. Notably, seven of the ten highest paying specialties in nursing require a master’s degree. Finally, she also has interest in teaching. As such, she intends to get the MSN to become a nurse educator in nursing schools, which do not have enough educators.
Description of Present Position and Role
Atthe moment, the interviewee is a unit supervisor in the surgical inpatient department of one of the local hospitals. As the supervisor, she is responsible for various activities in the department. One of these roles is ensuring that other nurses in the department conduct their mandates well (Hill & Sawatzky, 2011). Additionally, she is tasked with keeping records and administering medication to patients in the unit. She also consults with other healthcare practitioners and also monitors patients and educates them and their families on safety measures. She is expected to provide the best care to the patients and their relatives and offer the best support to the surgeons and other healthcare professionals (Iglehart, 2013). The supervisory role offers her additional responsibilities of being accountable for the actions of the nurses under her supervision.
Usefulness of Graduate Education for Present Role
One of the benefits that graduate education would have in her curren tposition is that she would acquire more skills and competencies. For instance, she would have the ability to specialize in one of the fields and hence concentrate on one area of nursing (Naylor & Kurtzman, 2010). An example of this is that she would have the opportunity to choose a nursing area and hence get the skills required for that role. Additionally, she would get key supervisory skills which would make her become a better leader and hence get much more respect from her juniors. As a graduate, she will have the chance to rise to a higher position considering that her competencies would have increased (Cubit & Ryan, 2011). As such, getting the graduate education will be so critical for her career development.
Pearls of Wisdom She is Willing to Share
The interviewee was prepared to share many pearls of wisdom in her career as well as success in any other profession. One of these is that studies should form part of any professional’s life. People should not assume that they have enough education and stop furthering their skills as they continue to get expertise with every course that they take. Additionally, the interviewee stated that hard work is a virtue required in every profession and career. As such, people should be willing to work harder than others to achieve their objectives. Finally, she stated that career development requires advancement in education. In this regard, individuals should always seek to acquire more knowledge and hence develop their capacities and professionalism.
In conclusion, advancement in education enables nurses to get more skills and competencies which ensure that they successfully surmount the contemporary challenges in the profession. In the unstructured interview with a nurse practitioner, she has confessed that she requires a graduate program to enhance her skills and acquire additional competencies. Additionally, after completing the program, she is sure that she would earn more and rise to higher leadership positions. The interview is consistent with the GCU program competency of excellent communication skills. Specifically, the ability of the interviewee to communicate well is in accordance with the skill. From the interview, I have understood that seeking graduate education is not just good for career growth, but also for financial benefits.
