Answer

Cultural Competence in Practice with Hispanic Children and Families

Introduction

I am currently doing an internship as a social worker working with families and children. I spend most of my hours working closely with my field instructor to help identify the social needs of and issues experienced by vulnerable children and communities. During my internship, I have encountered several Hispanic children and families. These experiences have greatly shaped my outlook on cultural competence in dealing with such populations. This video therefore presents a “Mini-Training” on cultural competence as a necessary skill for social workers dealing with Hispanic children and families.

Social issues that affect vulnerable children and families vary across populations but it is important to note the key issues that one is likely to encounter as a social worker (Lusk, Terrazas & Salcido, 2017). These may include depression, poverty, PTSD, alcohol and drug abuse, learning disabilities, domestic violence and ADHD. These issues are particularly predominant among vulnerable Hispanic families and children. Inn families where the children are exposed to domestic violence and alcohol and drug abuse, it is important to look out for signs of depression and PTSD. Similarly where parents report cases of learning disabilities, ADHD and depression in their children it is crucial to rule out domestic violence or drug abuse among parents (Lusk, Terrazas & Salcido, 2017).

During my internship, I have learnt that a Social worker has a duty to provide care to families and children without appearing to intrude on their privacy. It is important to communicate with both adults and children in a way that helps build mutual trust. People are more likely to share their struggles with the social worker when they feel that the social worker will empathize rather than judge (Barn & Das, 2016). Furthermore in Hispanic communities, women and children may not be very open in the presence of the husbands or fathers respectively.

With this knowledge in mind, I feel more motivated to learn more about cultural diversity and competence because I have learnt that it is a necessary skill if I am to relate better with my clients. I want the communities I work with to see me as a friend that they can confide in but also as a professional they can listen to.
