Answer
Minority Report
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Minority Report is a 2002 movie set in futuristic America in 2040 following how police departments use information from the gifted "pre-cog" individuals connected to a computer to help predict crimes before they happen. After their prediction, law enforcement uses this information to make arrests (Spielberg, 2002). One of these arrests is Howard Marks, a man arrested for the future murder of his wife, Sarah Marks. Alternatively, an argument can be made whether or not Marks committed a crime.
I believe that Howard Marks committed a crime. As the “pre-cogs” get wind of Marks’ crimes as a crime of passion late, it shows that Marks was already thinking about committing the crime. In the movie, while the Pre-Crime Department is locating Marks, Officer Fletcher states,”… With crimes of passion, there is no premeditation, so they show up late...” (Spielberg, 2002). This shows that by the time the crime is being committed, Marks had thought out the violent crime of killing his wife before committing it. The “pre-cogs” images are what law enforcement uses to determine Howard Marks’ guilt.
As a prosecutor, one can argue the crime was committed in the scene during Marks' location by the Pre-Crime department. In this scene, Marks is seen to be suspicious of the man standing by the other side of the street, and when he wants to spend time with his wife, who says that she has tasks to get through the day (Spielberg, 2002). This suspicion leads up to the thoughts of an affair between Mrs. Marks and the stranger on the street (Bussey, 2020). A prosecutor may argue that the premeditation makes Marks possible to commit future murder; therefore, it is a probable cause that warrants his arrest and conviction of murder.
I believe that Howard Marks will be found guilty of the future murder of his wife. The reason behind it is that the premeditation of his actions shown by the pre-cogs vision extrapolates images that show his intentions to commit the crime. Also, as Bussey (2020) states, this warrants a reasonable cause for his arrest and conviction. The images extrapolated from the pre-cogs vision are presented as evidence of the crime with a motive. Eventually, the recorded visions by the pre-cogs are presented in court as evidence against Howard Marks by the Pre-Crime department and sentenced.
