Answer
Mission and Function of the United Nations
The chosen organization for this discussion is the United Nations (UN).
Mission and Function of the Organization
The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1945 and headquartered in Manhattan, New York City. Being the largest international organization, UN has other head offices in Vienna, Geneva, the Hague and Nairobi. UN was founded after the Second World War with a primary aim of preventing civil wars and conflicts in the future. The mission of the organization, therefore, is to maintain international peace and security through promotion of conflict resolution and peacekeeping; provide humanitarian aid by solving social and economic problems; promote and protect human rights using legal instruments; promote international relations by upholding international law; and promote sustainable development (United Nations, 2019). The function of the UN is reflected in its mission and is stipulated in Article I of the Charter of United Nations. Thus, the key functions are to discuss and make recommendations on such subject matters as disarmament to enhance peacekeeping; peaceful arbitration of conflicts between nations to foster relations and cooperation; and maintaining international law for promoting sustainable development.
How the Organization Deals with Issues of State Sovereignty
As of today, the UN has 193 member states, and the membership is open to any country that values and loves peace, and is willing to comply with the principles specified in the UN Charter (Magstadt, 2016). The organization deals with issues of state sovereignty through its General Assembly. According to Schwartz et al. (2018), this involves the Assembly discussing, debating and making recommendations on “subjects pertaining to international peace and security, including development, disarmament, human rights, international law, and the peaceful arbitration of disputes between nations” (para. 4 line 4). For instance, promulgation of the Universal “Declaration of Human Rights” in 1948, the passing of the “‘Zionism is Racism’ Resolution” in 1975, and the unveiling of the Millennium Declaration in 2000 represent some of the General assembly’s actions in handling issues of state sovereignty.
