Advantages of using Both quantitative and Qualitative Research (Mixed Methods Research)
Quantitative and qualitative research are two fundamental methods that underly research activities in most fields and disciplines today, including nursing. The approaches are sharply polarized in the way they are applied in research studies, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses that makes it suitable or unsuitable for a given study. For instance, whereas qualitative research provides the researcher with opportunities to get a richer picture of different contexts and develop deeper insights into assessing and exploring the behavior, perceptions and understanding of participants, the approach is appropriate for small sample sizes and tends to be more time-consuming. In comparison, quantitative research allows for collection data from larger sample sizes within a shorter time, but the data, and hence the resulting findings are superficial and mere snapshots of the phenomenon being studied as they overlook the participants’ experiences and perception (Rahman, 2017). The mixed methods research, which combines both the quantitative and qualitative research methods, was thus borne to leverage the advantages and strengths of both methods while offsetting their weaknesses.
One of the key advantages of mixed methods research is that it combines the strengths and benefits of quantitative and qualitative research, thereby making the study more rigorous. Notably, the principal premise of mixed method research is that the integration allows for a more synergistic and comprehensive utilization of data than when the data is collected and analyzed separately through quantitative and qualitative methods. This way, combining the methods improves the study outcomes by ensuring that the strengths of one method balances the limitations of the other method. Other advantages of the mixed methods research are that the approach allows the research to: explore quantitative findings using qualitative data; make comparison between quantitative and qualitative data; have a better understanding of the participants’ viewpoint; access more detailed and comprehensive data; conduct the study with greater flexibility (Creswell & Clark, 2017). However, the fact that mixed methods research combines two research methods means that the approach can increase the complexity and resource-requirements of the study as well as make it more time-consuming.
