Answer

Module 3 Assignment

Question set 1

Option A

How did the ideas of republicanism and sensibility influence how Americans viewed society and their relationships with one another?

According to the republicanism in 18th century, the rule was determined by merit rather than by right. This argument undermined the aristocratic ideology suggesting that one’s worth and virtue were based on birth. Consequently, republicanism argued that state levels possessed implications for the family all together. Thus, the family was still entitled foundational provision as the father rule through affection and individual merits as opposed to the previous view of rights. The culture of sensibility was created by 17th century revolution which expressed that relationships develop as a result of affection, but not force to both family and state. From such responsibilities, developmental languages would arise from such ties. In general, a community that is not held together by loyalty to the king could be held together by peoples’ loyalty to one another.

What would keep Americans together once they separated from Britain?

Upon separation from the British colonialists, the Americans were to stick together from sensibility. With reference to John Locke, the nerve ending allowed people to feel as it involved their emotions. On the other hand, Thomas Paine mixed sensibility and language with family as a foundation for the American independence from the British. As such, when the Americans were subjected to feelings that brought sense of pain, happiness and bittersweet moment, then they were able to act morally to each other and stick together, having separated from the colonial rule. This way, the way to independence was attained through sensibility.

What role did the United States play in the Mexican Independence and Revolution in the 19th Century?

500-word essay answering the question of "What role did the United States play during the Mexican Revolution in the 19th Century?" Must use (From Colony to Superpower, Book by George C. Herring) as the source for the essay.

ANSWER

Role Played by the United States of America during the Mexican Revolution in the 19th century.

The United States has enriched history entailing its republic's birth, and its rise to become a hyperpower in the 21st century. American played a diplomatic role in the creation of American's national identity, domestic institutions, and the evolution of the international system. According to Herring (2008), various international movements like education, business, and missionary works that America involved in that helped shaped its relationship with the rest of the world. The American leaders had principles to secure the nation from external encroachment due to its favorable geographical position. America got involved in the major causes of the revolution in Mexico. Causes were dictatorship, exploitation, and maltreatment of workers and the poor, and the disparity that expanded between the rich and the poor. For instance, America supported the anti-reelection movements and involved in unseating Huerta.

In 1883 Mexicans and Americans prominent persons gathered at Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York to strike a deal on the pervasive Americans involvement in Mexican economic development, and in return, American investors access the cheap, abundant natural resources in Mexico. A decision got made on free trade, Mexican countryside privatization, and foreign investment (Herring, 2008). The detriments and the benefits of the decision made influenced the relationship between Mexicans and Americans, resulting in a political and social revolution in Mexico.

America tested various approaches to influence Mexicans; they partnered with the local elites, formed cooperative arrangements involving multinationals, especially in financial areas. Moreover, Americans funded and equipped the Diaz coup; Diaz was an army officer who ascended to power through a coup. During his tenure, only a few individuals monopolized the economic and political powers. American fuelled the unequal development of Mexico. The Mexicans became tired of Diaz, and they were seeking political and social revolution leading to the sparks of revolution in 1910 (Herring, 2008).  It was out of Diaz dictatorship and the use of excessive power that sparked the revolution. The Mexican economy was majorly owned by the Americans, who got offered incentives to buy the Mexican minerals. By 1900 almost a quarter of all land in Mexico was owned by American companies and the wealthy merchants forced low-income citizens to offer free labor in the cash crops plantation. In 1920 when Diaz set for re-election, Francisco Madero staged an anti-re-election party, which led to his arrest. On his release, he sought refuge in America, where he called for a land reform revolution on November 20th in 1910. Moreover, Americans supported Victoriano Huerta, who led the coup against Madero and trained and equipped Veracruz operations to prevent General John from invading Mexico. President Woodrow Wilson of America landed American troops in Veracruz under flimsy pretexts to oust Huerta; this received a strong rejection from every revolutionary leader except Villa (Herring, 2008).

Mexican revolution sometimes got interfered with by the Americans whom their interests were fluctuating from governmental to economic. American investors had invested heavily in Mexico; therefore, the American government was keen and intervened several, especially when the revolution aimed at land reforms. For instance, the USA troops intervened in the Cananea Copper mine revolution by using military troops.
