Legislative policies related to gender and pay have been relatively slow to change and has contributed to the stagnation in the growth of annual salary for social workers. According to Lane and Flowers (2015), social workers have failed to advocate for legislation at the federal and state levels and this has decreased awareness and penalties for gender based employment discrimination and training in the equitable management and hiring. The stagnation in the salary growth of social workers have been contributed by the tendency of employers to retaliate against social workers who share salary information with other professionals (Lane & Flowers, 2015). This has instilled fear among social workers to advocate for better salaries and possible agitate for the increment in their pay.
The average salary for social workers has remained $35,000 per annum due to lack of organizational policy changes aimed at educating and advocating within various organizations to ensure that employers comply with the international laws and best practices in social work practice (Lane & Flowers, 2015). Most of these organizations have been hesitant to conduct systematic salary reviews to establish the existing disparities that violate better pay or spirit of equal pay legislation. To adjust these disparities, organizations should conduct salary adjustments that will benefit professionals, especially social workers who have been hardly hit and act as a baseline for future salary increment decisions.
The average salary for social workers has remained $35,000 per annum because social work learning institutions tasked with educating learners about the labor laws have failed to equip social workers with the understanding of unacceptable and acceptable hiring and salary procedures (Lane & Flowers, 2015). These institutions have failed to teach social workers confidence building, job negotiation, and assertiveness skills so that these persons can understand the systems they are entering and how to transform these systems to correct unethical or illegal hiring or salary practices that they witness in their workplaces.
In conclusion, social work practice has the chance to lead in fostering social justice within the practice, society and educational institutions. Therefore, advocacy for improved practices in social work remuneration, practice and legislative policy can ensure that the annual salary for social workers grow proportionately with the growth in economy and market demands.
