Reportedly, the average salary for a social worker is $35,000 annually and considering the workload, this is a significant challenge in the job. Legislative policies related to gender and pay have been relatively slow to change and has contributed to the stagnation in the growth of annual salary for social workers. According to Lane and Flowers (2015), social workers have failed to advocate for legislation at the federal and state levels and this has decreased awareness and penalties for gender based employment discrimination and training in the equitable management and hiring. The stagnation in the salary growth of social workers have been contributed by the tendency of employers to retaliate against social workers who share salary information with other professionals (Lane & Flowers, 2015). This has instilled fear among social workers to advocate for better salaries and possible agitate for the increment in their pay.
The average salary for social workers has remained $35,000 per annum due to lack of organizational policy changes aimed at educating and advocating within various organizations to ensure that employers comply with the international laws and best practices in social work practice (Lane & Flowers, 2015). Most of these organizations have been hesitant to conduct systematic salary reviews to establish the existing disparities that violate better pay or spirit of equal pay legislation. To adjust these disparities, organizations should conduct salary adjustments that will benefit professionals, especially social workers who have been hardly hit and act as a baseline for future salary increment decisions.
