Creating a Professional PowerPoint Presentation
In a PowerPoint Presentation, address the following.
- Title Slide
- Introduction(1 slide): Slide should identify concepts to be addressed and sections of the presentation. Include speaker’s notes that explain, in more detail, what will be covered.
- Practice Issue(1-3 slides): Describe the area of interest and practice issue/problem related to NP practice selected in week 2. Explain why the issue/concern is important to nurse practitioner practice and its impact on health outcomes. Provide speaker notes. Provide scholarly references to support your ideas.
- PICOT Question (1 slide): Provide the PICOT question developed in week 2. Describe each element of your PICOT question in one or two sentences, being sure to address all the following:
- P-Population and problem– What is the nursing practice concern or problem and whom does it affect?
- I–Intervention– What evidence-based solution for the problem would you like to apply?
- C–Comparison– What is another solution for the problem? Note that this is typically the current practice, no intervention at all, or alternative solutions.
- O–Outcome– Very specifically, how will you know that the intervention worked? Think about how you will measure the outcome.
- T–Time frame– What is the Timeframe involved for the EBP initiative or the target date of completion?
- Literature review (2-4 slides):Summarize the literature review completed in week 5. Discuss themes and special concerns. Discuss any unique insight or perspective offered from the literature. Provide speaker notes. Speaker notes and/or slides include citations from scholarly nursing literature which support the assertions presented.
- Recommendations(3 slides):
- Slide 1: Identify the evidence-based recommendation for the identified practice change. Speaker’s notes should fully explain the recommended change and rationale for the change. Provide support from scholarly references to support the recommendation.
- Slide 2: Identify the key stakeholders impacted by the recommended change. Speaker’s notes add detail.
- Slide 3: Analyze the recommendation in terms of fit, feasibility, and appropriateness as discussed by Dang and Dearholt (2018), ch. 8. Speaker’s notes add detail.
- Note: information regarding stakeholders, fit, feasibility, and appropriateness may be based on personal experience or on information you found in your research. If the identified factors come from the literature, provide reference citations to support your ideas.
- Conclusion: (1 slide)Slide provides summary points of presentation. Speaker’s notes provide final comments on the topic.
- References:Reference elements provided in APA format, may use bullets. Hanging indents not required.

Awareness of the Impact of Health Policy among NPs in New Jersey
Introduction
- Purpose
- To examine how awareness of health policy, and involvement in health policy development affects NPs in New Jersey in their nursing profession.
The ability of nurse practitioners (NPs) to provide patient-centered care that improves patient outcomes is shaped by many issues or factors in the healthcare environment. One of such factors is health policy. Indeed, health policy impacts NPs in their all areas of their clinical practice since the rules stipulated in the policy govern the way they respond to health issues, such as language-specific care, and culturally appropriate health care. Health policies are often instituted by private and governments, and thus the best way NPs can ensure the policies reflect and uphold their interests is through advocacy, which would allow them to participate in their (policies) implementation. The purpose of this presentation is to examine how awareness of the state’s health policy affects NPs in New Jersey in their nursing profession, and how advocacy can help them ensure that their interests are upheld in the policy.
Practice Issue
- Area of Interest
- Health Policy
- Rules aimed at governing NPs in the way they respond to health issues such as staff safety practices
- Health Policy Advocacy
- Supporting, leading and collaborating with other stakeholders in healthcare to protect the patient’s legal and health rights as well as the interests of nurse practitioners.
- Issue/problem
- Lack of awareness of the impact of health policy on nursing profession and health outcomes
- Health Policy
Health policy change activities are increasingly recognized as the key drivers for meaningful improvement in health outcomes, and thus are the focus of many healthcare systems today. Health policy of any health care system comprise of rules aimed at governing NPs in the way they respond to health issues such as culturally appropriate or sensitive health issues, staff safety practices, and confidentiality of patient’s health information among other issues. Since health policies in New Jersey are developed primarily by the state government, NPs should participate in their implementation and adoption through policy advocacy. Health policy advocacy is the process of supporting, leading and collaborating with other stakeholders in healthcare to promote health policy change as well as the adoption and implementation of effective health care laws and regulations. Policy advocacy gives NPs a voice in decisions regarding the change of health policy rules, and the allocation of resources by both private and government institutions. This way, they (NPs) are uniquely positioned to ensure that the new policies safeguard their interests, as one of the crucial stakeholders in the healthcare system. However, many NPs are still unaware of the benefits of health policy advocacy to the nursing profession.
Practice Issue Cont’d
- Why the Issue is Important
- Being aware of the impact of the state’s health policy will enable NPs to;
- Ensure that their interests are effectively incorporated in the health policy
- Have a voice in the government’s decisions that affect their profession and the health rights of patients.
- Encourage and collaborate with other stakeholder to push for reforms across the health care system
- Impact of the Concern
- Improve patient outcomes and satisfaction by providing individualized and patient-centered care.
- Being aware of the impact of the state’s health policy will enable NPs to;
The issue of awareness of the impact of health policy is of fundamental importance to NPs in numerous ways. First, increased awareness of the health policy impacts will enable the NPs to support, encourage and lead reforms in the health care in order to ensure that the policy reflects and safeguards their interests. Second, the awareness and advocacy will give the NPs a voice in the decisions – by the state government and private institutions – that affect their profession as nurse practitioners as well as the legal and health rights of patients. Regarding the issue’s impact on health outcomes, awareness of health policies will enable NPs to provide individualized and patient-centered care, thereby driving positive patient outcomes and improving patient satisfaction (Williams, Phillips & Koyama, 2018).
PICOT Question
- P-Population and Problem: Awareness of the Impact of Health Policy on the Nursing Profession among NPs in New Jersey.
- I-Intervention: Increasing NPs’ awareness of health policy impact on the nursing profession to promote effective advocacy that benefit their interest.
- C-Comparison: NPs unawareness of health policies that impact the nursing profession resulting in policies that are not favorable to the nursing practice
- O-Outcomes: Increase NPs awareness of health policy impact on the nursing profession in the state of New Jersey, and the ability to influence and advocate for policies beneficial to the practice.
- T-Timeframe: Within six months.
PICOT Question
In the state of New Jersey what is the effect of NPs awareness of health policies impact on the nursing profession in comparison to lack of awareness and advocating for health policies resulting in increased amount of NP awareness and advocating for effective and beneficial policies within six months?
Literature Review
- Healthy Policy
- Describes the course of actions and guidelines undertaken to attain specific health care goals (AbuAlRub & Abdulnabi, 2020).
- Established to address the issues affecting health delivery system
- Determines health outcomes and the overall nursing practice and profession (Salvage & White, 2019).
- Often instituted by federal and state governments, parliaments and boardrooms, with low NPs’ involvement, but this is beginning to change.
Health policy, as one of the key areas of nursing practice, has attracted the interest of many researchers. For instance, AbuAlRub and Abdulnabi (2020) investigated the area, and defined health policy as the course of actions or practices undertaken by governments (federal and state) and other stakeholders in order to attain specific health care goals. It is developed by government and private institutions, and details a set of rules aimed at governing the way health issues are addressed by various stakeholders in the health care system, including nurse practitioners. A similar argument is echoed in AbuAlRub and Abdulnabi (2020) who established that health policies are established to address the issues affecting health delivery system, including quality of care, cost of healthcare, and healthcare access. As such, as Salvage and White (2019) seconds, health policy determines health outcomes, and the overall nursing practice in their professions.
- NPs Involvement in Health Policy
- NPs can get involved in healthy policy development and implementation through advocacy
- Importance
- Influence on health policy enables NPs to protect and promote the quality of care by increasing the required opportunities and resources (Arabi, Rafii, Cheraghi, & Ghiyasvandian, 2015).
- Support and lead efforts to address problems facing the health care systems (Ellenbecker et al., 2017).
- Accelerate attainment of high-quality care for patients (AbuAlRub & Abdulnabi, 2020)
- Advance health equity (Williams, Phillips & Koyama, 2018).
NPs in New Jersey in have a responsibility to address the health issues facing the state as well as their professional concerns by participating in and contributing to health policy development (Ellenbecker et al., 2017). One of the ways the NPs can participate in health policy development is through advocacy. As Arabi, Rafii, Cheragh and Ghiyasvandian (2015) note advocacy enables NPs to influence health policy by increasing the opportunities and resources required to promote the quality of care and address problems facing the health care systems.
- Proposed Intervention
- Some of the problems facing patients and NPs themselves in healthcare settings is partly because they are yet to fully realize their potential in participating in health policy advocacy and leadership (Ellenbecker et al., 2017).
- Evidence-based Solution
- Increase NPs’ awareness of health policy impacts on clinical practice, through education
- Anderson et al. (2020) reminds NPs of the growing need to increase their policy footprint. Despite the many benefits of NPs’ engagement in health policy development, Ellenbecker et al. (2017) establish that nurses are yet to fully realize their potential when it comes to participating in leadership and health policy advocacy. Most NPs seem to simply want to carry on with their daily duties and implement the decisions by the state government and other stakeholders in the boardroom (Salvage & White, 2019). This introduces many problems in the nursing profession, including failure to meet the nurses’ personal and professional interests. One of the evidence-based solutions to the issue is increasing the NPs’ awareness of healthy policy impacts on clinical practice, through education.
Recommendations
- Evidence-based Recommendation
- Increase, through education, NPs’ awareness of health policy impacts on the nursing profession and health outcomes.
- Knowledge and application of the concepts and advocacy of health policy has been recognized as a crucial component of nursing practice in the U.S. (de Cordova et al., 2018).
- As de Cordova et al. (2018) adds, the current health care and political environments require nurses to be skilled and well-informed in their ability to influence and shape health policy not only at the local level, but also at the state, national, and international levels.
One of the evidence-based interventions to promote NPs’ involvement in health policy development and implementation is increasing their awareness of the impacts of health policies on both health outcomes and nursing profession. The effectiveness of this intervention is supported by de Cordova et al. (2018) who establish that being knowledgeable about the current health policies is a crucial component of nursing profession as it enables nurses to advocate for policy reforms aimed at safeguarding their professional interests as well as promote patient outcomes. Additionally, the current state of affairs in the political and health care environment calls for the need for nurses to be skilled and well-informed in their ability to influence and shape health policy not only at the local level, but also at the state, national, and international levels.
- Key Stakeholders to be Impacted
- Nurses
- Nurse leaders
- Accrediting bodies
- Professional nursing organizations
- State government
- Patients
Implementing the recommended intervention – increasing, through education, NPs’ awareness of health policy impacts – will requirement involvement of various stakeholders, particularly those who will be directly affected by the intervention. Some of the key stakeholders include nurses, nurse leaders, accrediting bodies, professional nursing organizations, state government, and of course, patients. Each of these stakeholders will play different roles to see to it that that the intervention is implemented successfully.
- Fit, Feasibility and Appropriateness
- Feasibility
- Multi-stakeholder involvement, particularly the New Jersey state government, will make the awareness and education programs feasible.
- Resources
- Trainers knowledgeable in health policy
- Training kits and manuals
- Printouts and handouts for NPs’ future reference
- Time to attend awareness programs.
- Feasibility
- Dang and Dearholt (2017) advise one to ask him/herself various questions when evaluating the fit, feasibility and appropriateness of an evidence-based intervention. The questions should revolve around determining the capacity of the current organizational infrastructure and resources to effectively implement the intervention as well as the intervention’s ability to improve clinical outcomes, and drive patient and nursing staff satisfaction. Based on this argument, improving NPs’ awareness of the impacts of health policy on health outcomes and nursing profession, through education, is feasible as it involves multiple stakeholders, including the New Jersey state government. Additional resources needed to facilitate the intervention’s implementation are trainers well-versed with the development, impact and application of health policies. Other resources will include training kits and manuals, printouts for NPs’ future reference, and time to awareness programs.
Recommendations cont’d
- Fit, Feasibility and Appropriateness Cont’d
- Fit and Appropriateness
Awareness of health policy impacts
Participation in health policy development
Health policy advocacy
Ensure NPs professional interests are upheld
Protection of patients’ health and legal rights
Improved patient and health outcomes
The recommended intervention is also fit and appropriate to the nursing practice issue at hand in the sense that increasing the NPs’ awareness of health impacts on nursing profession and health impacts will inspire and encourage the to participate in health policy development. In turn, they will engage in health policy advocacy, which will enable them to the implemented policies protect the legal and health rights of patients while safeguarding their professional interests. This way, the intervention will contribute significantly to improved patient and nursing staff satisfaction, thereby leading to positive health impacts.
Conclusion
- This presentation examined the importance of NPs’ awareness of health policy impacts on nursing practice and clinical outcomes.
- Being knowledgeable in health policy impacts;
- Informs participation in health policy development, which in turn,
- Promotes health policy advocacy, which in turn
- Drives patient and nursing staff participation, which ultimately
- Contributes to positive health outcomes
Analysis of increasing NPs’ awareness of the impacts of health policy on the nursing profession and patient outcomes reveals that the intervention is an evidence-based intervention for encouraging NPs’ participation in health policy. Indeed, it is without doubt that getting involved in health policy formulation and implementation will mark the first towards ensuring that the NPs’ professional interests as well the health rights of patients are reflected and upheld in the health policies, which will in turn promote staff and patient satisfaction, and ultimately contribute to positive health outcomes.
