Nurse Legislator Role
The nursing profession has received a historic milestone by crossing nursing professionals into politics to further their advocacy roles at a different level. There are many states with nurses serving at the state and the federal legislative levels, with the numbers increasingly growing as people embrace nursing advocacy at the legislative level. Necessarily, the legislators, whether at the state or federal level, make laws that affect the daily operations in health, making it essential for someone with a healthcare background to influence such processes by taking into consideration the interest of the practitioners (Schaeffer & Haebler, 2019). Some of the states with an impressive legislative representation include Washington, California, Hawaii, and Minnesota. However, Virginia remains one of the states with no nurse representation in both the Congress and state legislature (Davis, 2017).
Although there are no nurse legislators in Virginia, other nurse legislators are making impressive use of their presence in the legislative chambers to sponsor and support bills that will improve healthcare in their states and the country. One of such legislators is Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas who cosponsored the H.R.7945 - 116th Congress (2019-2020), to amend the public health service act to authorize grants to support schools of nursing in program enhancements and infrastructure modernization, increasing the number of nursing faculty and students, and for other purposes. Therefore, nurses are in a better position to address the health challenges as legislators since they approach the issues from a nurse's perspective, thereby representing the interests of the fellow nurses and the public. Besides, through sponsoring and supporting health-related bills, they advance the scope of their advocacy roles as nurse leaders, thus eliminating practice barriers (Schaeffer & Haebler, 2019).
