Nursing profession remains one of the most attractive, popular and respected professions attracting a massive number of recruits annually. Historically, the nursing profession has experienced enormous growth and demonstrated its ability to adapt to the changing healthcare demands and population needs. These have offered significant insights that have been instrumental in shaping the contemporary nursing industry. There are several lessons that we learn as a profession in the historical context of nursing, which is useful in developing further approaches to serve the needs of the patients better. Beginning as the brainchild of Florence Nightingale in 1854, the subsequent development of the Nightingale Principles provided an outline to guide the provision of care becoming the foundation for nursing and hospital care in the United States and across the world (Whelan, 2017).
The importance of nursing care, as exhibited during the American Civil War, led to an expansion of the training programs in nursing, with the women dominating the profession. By 1873, the American nursing profession made a significant step in the history of nursing through the establishment of three nursing educational programs including the New York Training School at Bellevue Hospital, the Boston Training School at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Connecticut Training School at the State Hospital (Whelan, 2017). The success of these three “Nightingale schools” led to the proliferation of other nursing schools and a change in demographics with the men venturing into the profession. Throughout history, the emphasis has been on quality training for quality service delivery with the application of the fundamental principles and accountability measures.
Moving into the next century, the profession must make every effort to maintain proper training to meet the current workplace demands and challenges. Besides, the profession has to eliminate potential demographic barriers that hinder the expansion of scope and practice (Whelan, 2017). Through such initiatives, the profession will remain more committed to the provision of care. The aging baby-boom generations and the need for evidence-based practice as well as a patient-centered approach in care necessitates highest levels of qualification and professionalism, essential for the transition into the next century.
