Organization Culture and Supervision at Tulane Medical Center

Organizational culture influences the selection of models, approaches and strategies for selection. For instance, organizations with highly functional corporate culture tend to have supervisory activities that enhance employee motivation, satisfaction and performance (Patti 2009). A case in point is Tulane Medical Center which has been ranked among the largest and best performing institutions in the state of Louisiana. It is upon this basis that this paper provides a brief description of Tulane Medical Center, describes characteristics of its culture, and thirdly, explains factors that influence how human services administrator supervises personnel and volunteers to meet customer needs.

Tulane Medical Center is a healthcare facility and a primary teaching hospital attached to the Tulane University School of Medicine. It is found in New Orleans in the State of Louisiana. The hospital is a joint venture between Tulane University and Hospital Corporation of America. Zippia (2019) reports that Tulane Medical Center applies the clan type of organization culture. This type of culture is characterized have a family like work environment. The employees revere mentorship programs. The culture encourages nurturing of talents and doing things as a family (Leonard & Trusty 2015). As much as this is the dominant culture, the organization incorporates elements of adhocracy, hierarchy and market cultures. This is evident by its emphasis that employees come up with innovative solutions to challenges. There are adequate levels of control from the top management. This is evident by the presence of supervisors who oversee the working of the clinical staff. Additionally, Tulane Medical Center is results oriented, competitive, and the management rewards personal and collective achievements.

Guided by the corporate culture of Tulane Medical Center, the human services administrator will have to supervise in a manner that creates a feeling of an extended family, encourage participation, nurtures new skills and mentors the employees and volunteers to become better. Likewise, the administrator will have to practice their authority and control over the employees, yet find ways to guide them to come up with innovative solutions to challenges in the workplace.
