Perception Tendencies
Perception tendencies can distort how one appraises the other. Attribution to errors is one of the common perception tendencies which has influenced how I appraise another person. This perception tendency provides a depiction that people will always judge themselves charitably in comparison to the others, hence resulting to self-serving bias effect (Adler & Proctor II, 2016). Notably, I always assume that other people are similar to me which negatively influences how I appraise others. Looking at the case of self-serving bias which arises as a result of the attribution to errors theory, I always attribute my success to internal factors while blaming failures on external aspects. For instance, when I perform well in class, I consider my success to be as a result of my hard work and effort in studying the course material. However, when I fail, I always consider it to be as a consequence of my classmates who are always making noise while in class, hence, making it difficult for me to concentrate while studying. Attribution theory is regarded as a frequently used shortcut which is implemented when judging others.
Additionally, with the attribution to error as a common perception tendency, it is evident that people will cling to first impressions which further gives rise to the halo effect (Adler & Proctor II, 2016). With the halo effect, I always draw a general impression about an individual based on a single factor. For example, I am always judgmental based on people who have a different cultural background from mine. For instance, I always consider people who originate from third world countries to have trouble communicating in English since this is not their first language.
Adler and Proctor II (2016) mention that the noted perception tendencies can always result to different forms of bias. For example, an overconfidence bias can be experienced in the case of the presented tendencies as people tend to be overly optimistic which can result to randomness error.
