Answer

Question 1: Why do you believe that movies, sports and other forms of entertainment became so popular during the Great Depression?

I believe movies, sports and other forms of entertainment became so popular during the Great Depression because they offered people a way to escape the harsh reality. Despite the hard times characterized by poverty and unemployment, people still saved for admission fees to the movies. The entertainment seen enabled the public to temporarily forget the problems they face in their day to day lives thus the popularity.

Again, these forms of entertainment became popular during this period because the Great Depression influenced or inspired the content creators to reflect the changing value and societal problems in their work. Therefore, a lot of great contents were made for entertainment purposes. The materials were based on the past exuberant time in the 1920s, the great depression period or on promising days to come. For example, John Steinbeck wrote a book reflecting the experiences of those around him during the depression period.

Question 2: Why do you believe that the game of Monopoly became so popular at the time?

The game of monopoly became popular during the depression period because other forms of entertainments such as movies were too expensive for some households. The board game was reusable, relatively cheap and could entertain a group of people keeping family members occupied during the evenings. The monopoly game also provided a budget-friendly entertainment since players were playing for money and real estate.

Question 3: What role does race, sex and class play in these cultural elements?

Race, sex, and class enable people to witness the level of representation in these cultural elements (entertainment platforms) which further helps in determining any form of discrimination. For instances, only two black Americans were in international sports during the period (Jesse Owens and Joe Louis). This implies that there was racial discrimination in sports.

Question 4: It is safe to say that these cultural elements are still popular today. Is the cause of their popularity today the same as the Great Depression? In other words, do we like these things for the same reasons that people did back then?

I believe that movie, sports and other forms of entertainment to some extent are not popular today for the same reason they were during the great depression period. It is true that some people still to movie shows to escape reality in their lives, but others also go to theatres for different reasons such as to show support to their favorite content creators or friends.
