The argumentative essay topics will ask you to take a position on a question and defend it.The topic choices will concern points of contrast, so think of those point of contrast:
• Individual (or national) responsibility vs collective responsibility
• All growth is good vs the distorting effect of the growth paradigm
• Management approach vs emphasis on characterAs in part a, the descriptive essay topic may require you to explain the position of one or more of the authors; you might also be asked to describe how the issue discussed in the second half of the course (population growth, consumerism, climate change) relate to one another.
Essay expectations
• A brief introduction stating what it is that you will be examining and. In the case of an argumentative essay, what is is that you mean to establish.
• A series of well-ordered paragraphs describing what you need to describe or. In the case for your position.
• A brief conclusion summarizing what you have described or in the case of an argumentative essay, stating what you have established.For an argumentative essay having a well-developed argument is more important than the number of (not-so-well-developed) points that you iterate
Pick one or two reason in favor of your position, discuss them as fully as you can in the time that you have and consider presenting objections to them and replying to those objections.In an argumentative essay you are being asked to take a position and support it, being able to craft your own (good) reasons will get you further than merely regurgitating somebody else’s reasons.
The key to a successful exam essay is having a well- structured presentation Take some time before you start writing to outline your essay; I.e. thinking about what you will write and the order in which you will present it. An essay that has a clear structure will do better than a dense stream-of-consciousness with little discernible structure

Population Growth Should Be Controlled
Statistics from July 2019 reveal that the total global population is 7.7 billion. Such a number is an aggregate of 1.1 percent growth per year. The increase in population not only surges the carrying capacity of the earth but also leads to an uneven distribution of population growth. The increase in population has been responsible for various adverse effects on individuals, families, and communities- especially in the less affluent countries (Singer, 1972). This argumentative essay argues that population growth should be controlled because it causes suffering- from lack of food, shelter and medical, overconsumption, and environmental degradation, despite critics arguing that nothing should be done about population growth.
Population growth has resulted in massive suffering for individuals and families in the less affluent countries because of the scramble for the finite resources available (Hursthouse, 2007). Population growth has led to constant poverty which has resulted in the lack of essential services such as food, shelter, and medical care and ultimately the death of individuals (Singer, 1972). Such suffering has been as a result of human beings failing to make good decisions as to the need to control their reproduction because of the finite number of resources. As a result, population growth will reduce such suffering to very small proportions.
Controlling population growth will reduce overconsumption and hence make much resources available for others through sustainability. According to Sagoff (2000), with the increase in populations, the economies expand, which leads to the depletion of the natural resources, the rise in prices, and the suffering of humanity. Many scientists, in the contemporary society, believe that the world is running out of resources which threatens the services provided by the ecosystem. Resource scarcity can lead to the collapse of ecology and hence make life unbearable on the globe (Hardin, 1974). Controlling the number of people on earth can resolve this issue by ensuring that the scarce resources are enough for everyone.
With high population growth, the environment will be degraded because of the search for more resources to sustain the huge number of people on earth. Population growth has led to climate change and the contamination of the environment (Hursthouse, 2007). As such, people should control their reproductive activities so that they can save the environment from degradation through the activities of people who fail to live a green life because of the high demand for scarce resources and the inability of the earth to sustain the increasing human needs.
Critics have argued that population growth is not one of the activities that the government and the world leaders should intervene because it is an act of God. In specific, it has been argued that although the world is morally obligated to ensure sustainable lives for its populations, people are not obligated to take measures to ensure population growth (Hardin, 1974). However, the critics fail to appreciate the manner in which people are suffering form lack of basic resources which has been caused by the scarcity of resources and huge populations.
In conclusion, population growth should be controlled to ensure the reduction in the suffering of people, reduce overconsumption, and prevent environmental degradation. The scarce and infinite resources have not matched the growing rate of the global population. As such, people have lacked the basics such as food, shelter, and medica services. Additionally, overconsumption has led to resource scarcity and environmental pollution and ultimately, climate change. Although critics vouch for lack of intervention on population growth, controlling the causes of population increase such as reproduction can go a long way into reducing human suffering and ensuring sustainability.
