Practicum Journal Week Five
Nurses play a vital role in promoting positive health outcomes in clinical settings and ensuring patient safety. As a result, they are often faced with difficult situations that require critical thinking and advanced problem solving skills (Dossey & Keegan, 2012). These skills are essential in helping nurses and other care providers make important clinical decisions that impact patients’ health outcomes and their quality of life (Bell, 2014). This journal discusses how I was able to sharpen my critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as, utilize them in making significant clinical decisions during my practicum experience.
During my practicum experience, I was able to sharpen and utilize my critical thinking and problem solving skills in a number of ways. For instance, I was able to implement my class knowledge and clinical experience to examine and diagnose patients. Similarly, my critical thinking and problem solving skills were efficient in helping me handle different types of clients and situations in various clinical settings (Somerville & Keeling, 2004). For example, I was able to handle difficult patients professionally and respond to emergencies effectively. Moreover, spending time with other skilled and experienced nurses gave me an opportunity to learn and sharpen my problem solving and critical thinking skills.
In conclusion, my practicum experience gave me a golden opportunity to improve and utilize my critical thinking and problem solving skills. In other words, I was able to use these skills to examine and diagnose patients. I also learnt how to handle different types of clients professionally such as difficult patients, as well as, respond to emergency situations effectively. Similarly, interacting with other skilled and experienced nurses gave me a chance to learn from them and sharpen my problem solving and critical thinking skills.
