Health care policies play an integral role in regulating the framework for the provision of healthcare services to Americans. The adoption of the affordable care Act significantly revolutionized the landscape of the provision of medical care. It showed the power healthcare policies have on changing the way care is provided in the country. Currently, there is a proposed policy to lower the cost of drugs in the united states. The policy proposed Elijah E. Cummings titled Lower Drug Costs Now Act seeks to reduce the cost of drugs in the country.
According to Prasad, De Jesús and Mailankody (2017) Americans pay more on prescription drugs than any patient around the globe. Garness (2019) estimates that the costs of prescription drugs averages to $1,200 annually per person. The cost of vital life savings medications continues to increase in the country. According to Prasad, De Jesús and Mailankody (2017), cancer drugs easily cost patients $10,000 in a month. Even though most of the money is paid by the federal government and insurance companies, the public also pays for the money through the high insurance premiums and federal taxes. Anti-competition practices such as long patents have enabled pharmaceutical corporations to profit from lifesaving drugs such as insulin at the detriment of patients of need such medications. The policy, therefore, seeks to reduce the prices of prescription medication in the country and to eliminate the current anti-competition practices that benefit corporations without considering the well-being of patients.
In conclusion, the policy should pass without amendments that water down its current intended purpose. From the data, it is evident that Americans pay outrageous charges to get access to vital lifesaving medications. High drug prices lead to low drug adherence and cause financial ruin to those who struggle to purchase and use drugs as prescribed. Therefore, the country must adopt the policy to save millions of Americans currently struggling to afford expensive lifesaving medications.
