President Bush on the 9/11 Attacks
For several decades now, the US has unequivocally occupied a superpower position in the world. It is safe to say that the US is like a shining city on a hill. It has come to be known and admired as the land of freedom and opportunity. As a result of this prestigious position in the world, certain outside forces have sought to wage war with America even as they seek to dim the light. The 9/11 attack indeed occurred because America is the brightest beacon of freedom and opportunity.
The American values such as freedom, equality (of the sexes and the races), constitutionality and the like were not arrived at by chance. They were in part as a result of the experiences of our forefathers and their resolve to leave America better than they found it. In the early 1900’s, for instance, there was the fight for women’s rights and by 1920; women had the right to vote. This is, however not the case in many Islamic countries. Similarly, the Civil Rights Movement culminated in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which made good the pronouncements of the Declaration of Independence to the effect “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (U.S. Declaration of Independence, 1776). Essentially, because of these great gains by our forefathers; America has grown to become a beacon of freedom and opportunity.
Because of these great gains outside forces who may still be backward or who may not ascribe to the American value systems may target America because they are envious of its position and influence in the world. Through the attacks violent extremists sought to dim the American star whose light could be seen across the globe. It is indeed true that 9/11 attacks occurred “because we’re the brightest beacon of freedom and opportunity in the world.”
