Prohibition of Genetically Modified Food at Kroger’s Stores

Kroger is the United States’ largest supermarket chain by revenues and the second largest-general retailer. The company which is located in the Southern and Midwestern United States operates 38 food processing facilities hence it is one of the leading retailer of food items besides the Whole Food Market. In that regard, its conducts, policies, and mode of operation positively or negatively affect a larger number of people.

The policy to prohibit genetically engineered food has been reached as a result of the effects these foods have not only to the lives of people but also to the environment as a whole.  According to several researches, genetically modified foods were created with the purpose of improving the overall quality of life; however, they are associated with several environmental and health risks which make them to be more harmful than helpful.

First, with extensive research, the company has enough evidence that genetically modified foods are harmful cause certain complications which may lead to poor quality of life. Animal studies, shows that genetically modified foods cause organ damage, immune system and gastrointestinal disorders, infertility, and accelerated aging. The same study reveals that genetically modified foods leave certain substances in people which cause long-term health effects as well as certain fatal disease such as cancer and heart disorders. Secondly, genetically engineered foods have been associated with allergenic effects which has made life of some people very difficult. Introducing genetic materials from one species to the other introduce allergenic materials. If genes from such foods are introduced into other foods without suitable labeling, allergic reactions could occur which can affect the victims. An example of such incidence is the introduction of genetic materials from Brazil nuts into soybeans.  Lastly, GMOs harm the environment. Notably, GM crops and the associated herbicides are able to harm birds, amphibians, insects, soil organisms, and marine ecosystems. They pollute water resources, reduce bio-diversity, and are highly unsustainable to the environment. For instance, GM crops are removing habitat for the monarch butterflies, whose populaces have reduced to 50% in the US.

Ladies and gentlemen, the top most priority of Kroger is to create a sustainable and safe environment for all living things. It is in this context that after realizing potential hazards of genetically engineered foods, the company just like our competitor Whole Food Market, has banned all food items that are believed to have been manufactured through modification of their genetic makeup. This policy will, therefore, fully implement the quote of the CEO where he said “As a leading natural and organic products company, 99% of our natural and certified organic food products are made from non-GMO ingredients, a standard we have met for some time,”

The company is fully aware that some of our good customers are going to be affected by this policy. We urge them to note that this decision has been reached based on the interest of everyone, especially the consumers. Either way, the company apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the decision.
