Answer
Primary Source Paper: Information Literacy
Primary source of information always tends to be more accurate and veracious compared to secondary sources. The underlying reason is because where primary sources derive their information from first hand experiences, secondary sources might get their information from biased sources which might affect the veracity of such information. The primary sources in the book give a slightly different picture of events from certain eras in American history compared to the basic factual information found in the textbook titled “America: A Concise History.”
One of the primary sources documents which gives a differently image of American history is the “A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1588)” (chapter 1, document 1-1) by Thomas Harriot. According to this document, Hariot argues that the Algonquin Indians already had a religion before the colonization by the English men. Some of the Gods that they believed in include the Montóac. However, the Indian also believed that all the gods had a human shape and thus sought to represent them by various images of men that they termed as Kewasówok and Kewás. Such information is different from the basic factual information written in the textbook chapter by Henretta e al. (2018). In specific, the book is only focused on the manner in which the English colonization affected the indigenous Indians. As such, whereas the primary source is more specific and descriptive, the book by the authors is more polished and only makes a summary of the information.
The Indians that Christopher Columbus encountered were handsome people, naked, but with very good countenances (Christopher Columbus, Journal of the First Voyage (1492), chapter 1, document 1-3). This document t provides the sources of American history from the perspective of Christopher Columbus who is considered to be the person who discovered the Americas. Columbus describes his first experience as an easy one considering that he already knew that the indigenous people could be more easily transformed and even converted to the holy faith either through love of by force. Such information that Columbus provides in this primary source is different from that which is contained in the book. In specific, the book fails to recognize the fact that Columbus biases could affect his account of his meeting with the natives. As such, the book’s information is not as specific as to the events that happened in the first meeting compared to the primary source.
The third and final primary source about American history claims that colonization had massive effects on the native populations because there were various atrocities perpetrated against the indigenous people (Brother Luis Brandaon, Letter to Father Sandoval (1610), chapter 1, document 1-6). Some of these include slave trade that raised various moral issues. The primary source shows that slave trade by early seventieth century was so much prevalent. However, the authors of the book downplay the magnitude of slave trade during this period and the manner in which colonization changed the peaceful coexistence in the indigenous populations and brought about atrocities in the nature of slavery and slave trade.
