Principles and concepts for developing cardio Respiratory Endurance for Physical Fitness
From chapter 3 of the book by Anspaugh, Hamrick and Rosato entitled Wellness: Concepts and applications, I learnt about the key elements of physical fitness (76). Specifically, I have been made to appreciate the components of a healthy exercise regime, which include controlled exercise, warm up before exercise and cooling down thereafter, preparations and precautions while exercising under different weather conditions so as to gain both health-related and performance-related benefits of fitness.
As a result of the insight I gained from this chapter, I am going to radically adjust my lifestyle to include as much physical exercise as is helpful. Principally, I am going to begin exercising for its worth by inching towards cardiovascular endurance which helps individuals to lower their heart rate by some 10-15 times in just a few months, enhanced cardiac output, hence more blood pumped per ventricular contraction, increased blood plasma, and stronger cardiac muscle (78). In addition, I am going to strive for greater muscle weight to cut down on fats so as to gain greater endurance. As a 37 year old, I was jolted to the realization that my body’s cardiac endurance - which incidentally began to diminish by about 8-10% after 25 years of age - can be improved by maintaining at least 30 minutes of exercise three days a week (80). Further, I gained valuable insight into the benefits of “warming down” through post-exercise activities such as mild stretching, walks and jogging. I also learned that such activities help to “drain” pools of blood in the muscles, eliminates lactic acid accumulation, and ensure controlled contraction to prevent muscle wear and tear (88). Finally, I learnt about preparations for exercise in hot and cold conditions to prevent injury and possible death from hyperthermia and hypothermia respectively.
