Answer
Processing a Crime Scene for Firearm Evidence
Processing a crime scene for fIrearm evidence is a critical process that requires great care to avoid an interference with the quality of findings. The surface where a projectile lodges into should not be tampered with. That is because the laboratory may not be able to get the accurate analysis regarding the firearm. With regards to the scenario provided, the proper steps and what was actually followed are listed as follows.
The proper steps to follow when processing a crime scene include;
- A) Photograph the overall wall area showing the defect in the drywall and the projectile that is lodge inside of the defect.
- B) Remove the lodge projectile from the drywall in a house.
- C) Photograph the projectile by itself after it has been removed from The Wall.
- D) Insert a Directional rod in the defect.
- E) Photograph the Direction rod as it is in the Defect.
These steps need to be in that particular order to ensure that the sample is not interfered with. The actual state of the sample before and after interference has been recorded through photography. This follows a step by step procedure which ensures that there is no room for confusion. Although this is the proper approach to consider, the steps I took previously were as follows.
- A) Photograph the overall wall area showing the defect in the drywall and the projectile that is lodge inside of the defect.
- B) Remove the lodge projectile from the drywall in a house.
- C) Insert a Directional rod in the defect.
- D) Photograph the projectile by itself after it has been removed from The Wall.
- E) Photograph the Direction rod as it is in the Defect.
In this approach, all evidence is collected first before photographs are taken. I realise that this may lead to inaccurate findings since the immediate record of the projectile after being removed from wall is missing. What has been used is the photograph of its state after the data collection process.
